UN pepper sprays hungry Haitians (and other tales of how Foreign Aid does not work)

Just another example of how foreign aid does not work so well...

Report on how foreign aid is taken by corrupt government officials and corporations... Your donation money being stolen by corrupt assholes.

Quote:
Thousands of hungry Haitians spilled into the streets defeating barbed wire and a tiny contingent of blue-helmeted UN peacekeepers distributing food.

The chaotic scene unfolded outside the wrecked presidential palace in Port-au-Prince where aid agencies struggled to control 4000-strong mass of desperate Haitians, two weeks after the devastating earthquake struck.

Security forces fired pepper spray into the air in an effort to disperse the thousands of men, women and children jostling for food.

George Monbiot has written quite a bit on foreign aid. Look up some of the tales he tells of how your foreign aid dollars are really spent. It really makes you second guess foreign aid spending. They really do squander that shit away in the most worthless ways. I mean, who do you think gets tht oreign aid money in the end? You can bet they ain't shipping over crates of cash money to hand out!

That's Haiti. What did you expect? They were robbing and stealing from UN before until such point that noone from UN would dare to go there. Do you think it's gonna change with an earthquake? No way, they are the same bunch of lawless apes only now with more opportunities to steal, rape and murder. Read HERE

That's why I'm only for foreign aid in the libertarian sense..

Private charity. And I'll only donate to those I trust. I can understand taking $15/hr off to pay the secretary and a few more to pay the accountant who keeps track of it all..

but some of these organizations take off billions. :o

Yep, and these so called charitable organizations have to, in some cases, stop skimming mad amounts of money off the top and also make sure the money gets into tth eright hands. Not corrupt government officials.

Official US Government site from 2009:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_1134.html
Excerpts:
The Haitian government requires foreigners to pay a departure fee.
CRIME: There are no "safe” areas in Haiti. There is a persistent danger of violent crime, which can be subject to periodic surges sometimes not obviously explained by other events or conditions. Haiti is among the four most important countries for drug transit to the United States. Law and order in Haiti has steadily deteriorated as a result. Kidnapping, death threats, murders, drug-related shootouts, armed robberies, home break-ins and car-jacking are common in Haiti. Generally, these crimes are committed by Haitians against other Haitians, although several foreigners and U.S. citizens have been victimized. The incidence of kidnapping in Haiti has diminished from its peak in 2006 when 60 U.S, citizens were reported kidnapped. In 2008, there were 27 reported kidnappings of U.S. citizens, and as of September 2009, one U.S. citizen had been reported kidnapped. Many U.S. citizens who were kidnapped reported being beaten and/or raped by their hostage takers. Kidnapping remains the most critical security concern. Kidnappers have frequently targeted children.
