Acer are pretty good I reckon, I know quite a few people with them and they never have problems. The battery seems to last fairly well on them aswell.

Depending on what you use your laptop for. If you just have it at home, want a portable computer just ot be able to tuck it away some times, easily go for a large screen and a nice large keyboard. If you on the other hand need a laptop because you are out travelling and constanly moving around, from one place to the next, then size matters.

I would recommend you look into Dell Latitude series, look at the E4200 or the E4300, both are very good allaround laptops but also somewhat rugged to be easily transported. They have decent performance and I always recommend that you buy an extra battery. With laptops I also recommend that you buy an extra charger, one that you can have on your desk and one for the road. Saves a lot of hassles of constantly having to disconnect and fiddle around. One is always in the bag, ready to go, and one is always on the desk, ready to work.

And any laptop battery will "last 8 hours" in a laboratory, where they set an airconditioner to blow cold air straight into the computer, so the fan doesn't have to work at all. There are numbers of tricks to increase battery performance when measuring it. Regardless of what number they come up with, it is much more important how you manage the battery as a user. Do you expose it to direct sunlight, do you run it completely down and then all the way up once per month or do you just charge a little here and there, do you take it out if you are going to be working with thte charger connected for longer periods of time? All those things will determine how fast the battery looses capacity, sure, anyone of the laptop producers today can show 8 hours performance, but for how long will the battery keep that capacity? Many will loose it pretty quick, in say three months time or so, you will already see a notable difference in battery capacity and performance.

Oh, and don't forget, if you buy it in a chain store, like best buy or so, you can almost always get a good deal on antivirus if purchased together. Symantec/Norton antivirys is usually half off if purchased with a new computer, you don't get the nice box and manual with it, but you don't need those anyways. And a normal Norton license covers three home/small office computers.

I mean in the long run. The batteries seem to keep the max capacity for a long time.

I have a toshiba right now and it's about 1 or 2 years old. Started with 2 and 1/2 battery life. Now it's down to about 30 minutes NOT GOOD!!! Acer seem to keep the maximum capacity for quite a long time. |

Too late for suggestions but Macbook Pro would have been the best choice.

I would go with dell, hp anytime, excellent workhorses can take heavy usage and abuse for several years, only thing - i go with more expensive models so i don't have to buy new one every 6-12month
