Ever want something cool you can easily afford but would feel guilty about buying for yourself?

I'd like to own one of those old school Ms Pac man or Galaga cocktail table arcade games but I'd feel guilty spending $800-1000 on one.

Same goes for a Zenith watch. I'd like to own one but I'd feel like a dick spending 10k on a watch.

I'm currently thinking about running a contest for program owners or guys with big traffic to hook them up with unique or custom prizes in exchange for a large number of joins.

What are some things you would like to own and can easily afford but would feel guilty or foolish buying for yourself?

pacman is pretty widely available in the cocktail, keep your nose down and you'll pick an operational one up in slightly rough cosmetic shape in the $200-400 area. don't talk to dealers you'll get hosed.

Ive looked into it and the ones in that range seem to have issues. I'd honestly still feel kinda foolish knowing I could buy 4-8 new games for my 360 for that price.

In the last few years I've come across 3 pac/ms pac under $500 in good operational condition. Cabinets a little bet up and the glass a little scuffed, but operational. You need to do some hunting, but they're out there. They tend to turn up in small town bars and such. Just keep your eyes peeled. Could have bought an awesome Arkanoid cocktail table in mint mint shape for $600 at a motel a few years ago, but just wasn't something I cared enough about to spend $600 on at the time. I'm still digging for a 1980 Monaco GP standup. I'd drop some coin on that baby. $600... NP...

Arkanoid is the shit. I loved that arcade game as a kid.

If a program you currently promote said they would hook you up with that Arkanoid machine if you pushed 100 joins through in a month, would you try to meet that goal or not give a shit?

Make it a 1980 Monaco GP standup and I'll give it some serious consideration.

I think I owe my family something. I brought a life into the world I can go without fancy watches and shit so she can have a way better tomorrow.

I dont knock people who love "living life" by buying a bunch of things but there are other ways to live life.

o dont get me wrong id be taking care of my family.

im not saying "living life" is buying a bunch of things. but if you work hard you deserve it is all im saying. and if you have 10 or even 20 watches you shouldnt feel bad about it.

if you like to play pacman, and playing pacman makes you happy. than i dont see the problem with it.

being frugal is kind of bullshit imo. may as well not bother working your ass off in the first place if you dont plan on buying things with your money.

if you are really frugal give up all worldy possessions and live like a monk already.

I want an all in one arcade machine... they have a ton of games on them... pretty sick.

Here is an example of one but on my old computer I found like the absolute best one ever and favorited it but I don't want to digg it out.

To me, being frugal is spending absolute minimal on the things that you don't care about but spending plenty on the things that you do care about.

Example: I don't really care about cars, they simply don't matter to me. A new car, sure it looks nice but in the end I just don't care. I do however like TVs, so I have a couple nice ones. By being frugal with my vehicle choice, I am able to spend my money on the things that I do care about.

And I agree with you. If there is something that you want and you have the money, don't feel guilty. Money has many purposes, but one of the key purposes is to allow you to do the things that you want to do. If that means buy an expensive toy... buy that expensive toy. Life is short.

Yeah well what about the security that comes from having loot in the bank. You know if you get sick you have money, you know if you got in legal trouble you have money, you know if you wanted to retire right this second you could.... or even just knowing you COULD buy the pac man game if you want, or a boat, or a 10k watch... he doesnt actually need it, maybe he just likes to know he could get it if he really wanted it.

Thats makes some people very happy! And FYI most americans are in debt, so I wouldn't use that as an example to be like... to Mr. I spend every penny I touch LOL

being frugal would be instead of buying a 55" TV you would buy a 15" TV because it does the "same" task.

my mom for example is frugal.

you could give her a billion dollars and she would buy a used car. no new clothes. no jewelry no, nada. she would go out to dinner and order the half plate. if she was having company over she would buy the cheapest bottle of wine. that is frugal. and i love her for it.

"Ever want something cool you can easily afford"

the thread topic states this.

EASILY AFFORD to me means EASILY AFFORD. as in disposable income.

where do you get debt from out of "easily afford"?

why are you developing a million problems in your head? how can you live like that! omg im gonna get sick, omg im gonna be sued, omg omg omg omg. you may as well lock yourself in your room if you think like that. living life is not worrying about all possible negative outcomes. because frankly you wouldnt be able to do ANYTHING.

Never thought I'd type this, but: I gotta go with MetaMan on this one.

I'm a perpetually cheap bastard, but if it's something I absolutely want/deserve, I'll pay for it. Plus, it does say easily afford.

the definition of frugal:
"Frugality is the practice of acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal.[1]"

a bottle of cheap wine does the same job as an expensive bottle. cheaper clothes do the same job as expensive ones.

do not get cheap and frugal confused.

she has never been rich and is generous with her money. she is just frugal with her things. she comes from humble backgrounds. she doesnt care about status, that does not make her cheap.

rupert murdoch supposedly has had the same house forever now. that is not cheap it is FRUGAL. because as long as he has shelter it does the same job as a million houses.

listen to me more often you will learn something.

I am not saying "oh im gonna get sick or sued" but just to know... shit I got plenty of cash in the bank, so I just dont need to worry... easy to sleep at night compared to. Oh I just bought a pac man and a 10k watch and a new car and a this that and the other thing and dont have a huge savings... then what the fuck would you do if you really needed the cash?

I am not saying I believe this per se... just you should find the right balance of saving and spending for yourself that keeps ya happy and take the good and the bad that comes with it.

no you dont make sense. "easily afford" means "easily afford".

there is a difference between "afford" and "easily afford". how do you not get it?

i can easily afford a new shirt. i can afford a new car and make the payments. see the difference.

you have no common sense because you lack the basic knowledge to understand the word "easily".

Life's short and you can't take your money with you when you die so go ahead and spend it. I bought an autographed set of golf clubs by Tiger Woods last week. 4K but it's worth every penny. Tiger's my hero

Now I see how so many people got in debt. This logic is pretty messed up. No offense.

we are harsh because you cant admit you are wrong?

how can you "waste money" by not spending it? that makes 0 sense again.

"v. wast·ed, wast·ing, wastes
v.tr.
1. To use, consume, spend, or expend thoughtlessly or carelessly."

how do you "waste" something by not using it? please enlighten me.

"gives us joy in life" wtf are you talking about? you didnt even read the thread title and cant admit you are wrong. here is the title for you again:
" Ever want something cool you can easily afford but would feel guilty about buying for yourself? "

the thread is not about wasting money it is about feeling guilty or not when spending your money on yourself.

study it and report back on your findings.

Why is being frugal bullshit? Some people prefer to save money just to know they have it. If that makes someone happy they shouldn't feel bad to live like that.

And the way to save money is to not buy everything just because its "easily affordable" you save it instead of spend it. Isn't this how you save money? I feel like I am missing something but I am sure I am not hmmmm

nice backtrack after your 4-5 posts of nonsense.

i already answered you. can you not read? please insert your brain this time so i dont have to re answer your same question over and over.

the mere FACT of something being "easily affordable" is having savings in the first place. if you did not have the savings it would not be "easily affordable".

this thread is not about "is it ok to live frugal and be happy should i feel bad about it".

" Ever want something cool you can easily afford but would feel guilty about buying for yourself?"

he obviously likes the PACMAN game. and obviously when you obtain something you like it makes you happy. he asked "should he feel guilty" and the answer was NO.

In which I reply, maybe a Blue Ray player for TV or blue ray read/writer for computer.
