One of the new innovations in surfing photography is the use of cameras mounted on RC helicopters which are then flown off the beach and out to where the waves are breaking.

Some have captured some incredible video but one bad move can mean a total loss of equipment so it's very risky. It would be so cool to take a rig like that down to Costa Rica and fly it around capturing video

Couldn't find a surf video real quick but here's the general idea as to how I'd use one.
I saw a rig where they used an HD video camera mounted on a gyro that kept the camera level and it was amazing to watch.

I thought you meant a real one hehe! I was going to get one once, but decided on a boat. With a real one, its not the price of the chopper, its the price of the landing & where you keep it. With a model copter, well, they are just plain fun & hoping you have lots with it dyna mo

Here's another example of using an RC Helicopter for photography. Seems very risky
and leaving little room for error but yields rewarding results.
As a photographer the potential intrigues me as the technology advances.

I hope you find the right helicopter for you and get to have some fun with it

Trex 500 is the best combo of size and power. More than enough power to carry a camera.

Compared to how easy an RC plane is to fly I found a helicopter impossible

Top 2 are beginner ones the one on the left is slow and doesn't go fast the right one is a pretty zippy one that can fly outside not bad but very low wind both good for indoor playing both 4 channel

the bottom left I flew once and blew up the blades in a crash fixed it and put it back in box lol the right one is still brand new but both are out door 6 channel ones

How far can one of those go on a charge?
Has anyone tried hooking them up to the mobile networks and flying them with video feed only?

Not quite in the same league, but I've seen some cool still camera shots off a kite. I guess video wouldn't work since you can't precisely control a kite.

I have one of those... made the mistake of drunkenly trying to land and take off on the fiance's head. The landing went surprisingly smooth... taking off caused a hair catastrophe... The heli no longer gets used indoors.

Dieing to get a bigger cam model. I doubt Beth will be coming with me on the first few runs to use it.
