Why do people in the west have this "i have more things im better than you" attitude?

Let me get something straight for a lot of you idiots:

your house
your car
those things you bought with your credit card

you dont own them. the bank owns them. you are not better then everyone else. in fact you have LESS MONEY than poor people because YOU ARE IN DEBT.

the west needs to drop this i have more things i am better mentality. because 99% of you chumps are in for a massive wakeup call.

Because I have enough money and credit rating to not only get a jumbo loan but to be able to have a spare couple hundred thousand dollars for the downpayment?

And enough money and credit to buy several nice cars? (Don't owe anything on any of them by the way, paid them all off)

Or that I make enough money to run 50 grand a month through my credit cards and pay them each month?

That would be my guess as to why I'm better than you.

Just kidding...I don't blatantly feel that way at all about other people. But I do take pride in kicking ass and outworking my peers to run circles around a lot of them. I have a competitive personality and can't help that.

I own both of my cars. I haven't had any credit cards since I was like 25.

That is a good thing that is for you personally. I get the same kicks. I want money for me not to show off to everyone else.

There is a big difference for wanting nice things for yourself and family. and getting those nice things to show how great you are.

your work and dedication you put in makes you great. not your line of credit or the amount you are able to drop.

every millionaire i met doesnt ever brag about numbers or makes themselves try to sound better than me. the people tossing numbers around are always the chumps being used.

your jumbo loan is just that "a jumbo loan".

didnt you notice they were giving "poor people" jumbo loans over the past 4-5 years or did you miss the memo?

NICE. that i can respect. if shit hits the fan you will be one of the front runners. i got rid of all my debt now. i hated it.

i live a less flashy lifestyle. and am saving more money focusing on longterm.

the western mentality is living to die. how much can i spend today and not worry about tomorrow.

but it sucks for guys who do manage their funds properly. we are going to end up footing the bill for everyone else anyway.

No, they didn't give poor people a jumbo loan. Jumbo loans aren't covered by Fanny Mae or Freddy Mac. You have to meet a LOT of criteria to get one.

What they did was give out a shit ton of loans that most anybody CAN get. But they put them in homes that were out of their reach. But hell...with the prices of homes a couple of years ago, they were all out of reach for a regular working guy.

And you're 100% right about being "great" because of what you do (not how much money you have). But for most people (not talking about folks who inherited money), the money you make and the things you own are the direct result of how much ass you kick at what you do.

So yeah...I COULD see a multi-millionaire walking around in rags and not "bragging" because he's eccentric. But I've never seen a poor person driving around in a nice car and living in a 5,000 square foot home lounging in his pool (unless he's "newly" poor and just lost everything and on his way to eviction).

I think that the people who inherit money and come from "old" money like that are the ones who don't brag or show off. It's just natural to them.

But most people like me who busted ass to make it happen? I'm proud of my accomplishments. Especially in this kind of business where I'm working alone in my office with nobody to slap me on the back and say "good job".

So yeah, it does feel kinda good to have people say "Nice car!" or "I love your house". I know, it sound dumb and shallow (it is), but I'm only human.

Most people who act this way do so because they're insecure and need to make themselves feel superior. They honestly believe that acting this way will make people like them, but what it really does is make people despise them. Not because they're jealous, but because they come off as complete idiots. For me, what I own or whatever money that I have is not to show off or act like I'm better then anyone. Having a lot of money, cars, houses etc.. is all good, but don't throw your shit into people faces and act like you're so much better then they are.

In the end it's all about how happy you actually are. Is it real happiness or is it happiness that you made up to fool yourself?

You deserve to feel good about those things.

the west, the money is purely based off a facade, it is pure debt. rampant debt also, not controllable. and when dollars are worth next to nothing and food triples in price people are going to realize why it was so bad taking out all those loans.

by taking out massive loans x by a country wide x global wide scale. you are basically enslaving yourself and people further into a system.

yes times are good now. but there is no guarantees. if people would live a more balanced life there would never need to be a need for a recession.

and i dont mean you dont deserve nice things if you work for them. i mean they should not represent you. for me i came from humble beginnings and the older i get the more i realize i dont need "things" to make me happy.

the grind of work is to be successful in my own life. my work is my full time hobby. but i dont want to end result to show people how great i am.

in fact i want an island with a sports car far away from anyone that would even for 2 seconds all of a sudden give me a pat on the back for "making it".

question for you:
--------------
why does it feel good when people tell you "nice car" if you already know it is nice? maybe there is a deeper insecurity where you really do not know if it is nice or not. you just were told it is "nice" and feel better about yourself based on others blind validation.

In a case like that it's much different. You're not actually showing off. People are just saying these things to you and, like most people, it makes you feel good. It gives you a greater sense of accomplishment. You work hard for what you have and it's nice to hear things like this once in awhile, but if you walked around like you were the greatest thing and throwing all your money and things you own in peoples faces that would make you one on the people that Metaman was talking about.

I agree with doing business without debt. I am not in debt right now.
The Balance Sheet usually looks something like this:

Assets - Liabilities = Owner's Equity

Different business companies (or your personal finances) can be compared based on who has more Owner's Equity. Businesses can also compete based on: who is more liquid (more cash), who has better assets (house, car, supplies, inventory, etc.) and who has better human resources (employees, customers, clients, friends, etc.) Good luck.

true... very true. i know a lot of people who are way over their heads in credit card debt and loans.

I really don't get it though, why would you go out and just rack things up in a retarded manner on a credit card? I carry around 3 cards... My Amex charge, BofA debit and Amex credit card. The credit card has a $0 balance on it and i ONLY have it in case of an emergency

However, I do have both a car loan and a home loan. The car loan is 3 years with 1 year left and the home loan is 30 years but getting paid off in 14 but I didn't go over my head at all with those and knew exactly how much I wanted to spend and calculated interest + principle to see what the price would be of buying a car on a 3 year loan

well, there are four ways to measure your success:
your house
your car
your shoes
the beauty of your wife/girlfriend

like or hate it, that's the basic truth

people equate having stuff with being happy/successful. people have been taught to be consumers, it's a shame. the more stuff you have the more stuff you have to worry about.

says who?
you have the say in your own life.

if you continue to shoot for things that a society (which is obviously not happy) you will never be happy.

dont tell me about "basic truth". who wrote this truth? and why as a human dont you wise up and realize any "truth" made is actually a lie made by someone else to convince you of a truth to benefit themselves?

whos basic truth? please tell me.

People who brag about not having a mortgage and their home is paid for are financial dimwits.

With the current mortgage interest tax deductions you would have to be a complete idiot to pay off your mortgage or buy a home in cash.

bingo!

and people continue to push the view of the retailers without even knowing it. by living your life based on things, based on debt. you just give people with power, more and more power. with this power comes control. and people are more controlled then ever.

the perception of freedom is the greatest way to control people.

you make a choice within your own life the way it is and what is important.

ive stopped searching in all the wrong places and decided to get back to basics.

It all depends how you look at it, for example Nobel Prize Laureate may not have any of these things, but by many he is viewed as more "successful" than some wealthy wall street day trader...

anyone who has been around the block a few times, knows that all those things you listed mean shit, they are VERY easy to fake...

People bragging about anything are idiots.

We all wakeup, eat, shit and sleep.

everything else in between is completely perception.

sooooo many people "but i have this big house!!! i have a wife (who you no longer has sex with)!!!! i have a long job title!!!! how come no one respects me!!! i matter!!!"

people dont even say thank you when you hold the door open for people.

no one is better than anyone else and people need to get over it. especially us assholes in the west.

absolutely! less is more. having material items ties you down. people need to simplify their lives. besides everything you have worked to acquire can be gone at the drop of a hate.. fire, theft , jail, natural disaster, etc.. in an instant you have all your material items, next instant it's gone and so is your perceived happiness.

I'm sure it's a deep "insecurity" of some sort. I like to think that I'm immune and don't need the "approval" of others or society. But reality is...I'm just human.

I'd just like to point out that a Nobel Prize winner also wins TEN MILLION DOLLARS prize.

I think they just might have some very nice stuff after that.

cool man, not trying to say you are insecure, i just think as you said we are all just humans. i have the same insecurities just as anyone else.

but that is where my point ties in.

why should we as humans have any of these insecurities? if you are a good person, work hard then you should not have them.

and people i just think in general should stop attaching perceived things based on life. and look behind the scenes at what really goes on.

why do we as humans surround ourselves with things that are really meant to put on a facade for people of what we really are? when in the end we are all basically the same?

people only give gifts expecting one in return these days. i could go on and on. but the general lack of empathy for fellow man is tanking.

Don't hate you , don't hate me, if it's about MEASURING you can always check and compare penis size too.

In general, according to Castaneda, the best thing you can do is tying up
your show lace fine.

the global economy kind of depends on the wests need for over consumerism doesn't it?

One thing i love about threads like these are the amount of people it flushes out claiming they are debt and credit free... by my numbers nobody in adult uses a credit card or takes out a loan to buy a house or a car.

Just like the rest of us, i have credit and i have debts, I'm not happy about it but its true, but at least i can admit it ;)

I have a competitive personality and can't help that.
a good number of people who try and put on this attitude also don't make the money to back it up and end up losing everything. big difference if you can actually afford to live that way instead of on credit that the person should never of gotten in the first place.

Yes it does. But what if it depends on its crash also?

the west was propped up. we were really convinced for a while we are any different. that we are immune to the "outside worlds problems".

we were built to be raped. nothing more nothing less.

Dont feel bad we have the same thing here in canada. it is all over europe now also.

but i would say it is a big problem in the usa. the patriotism has become blinded and mis directed.

success = happiness. happiness can be all sorts of things. its just plain fact that the majority of people in the world will never acheive real financial success.
