Affordable dental care? Mexico has it.

For cut-rate dental care, head to Mexico - Jul 2010

TIJUANA (CNNMoney.com) -- A good smile can be a pricey proposition in the U.S., where barely half the population has dental insurance and routine procedures can run up four-figure bills. Want a porcelain crown for a damaged tooth? That'll cost $945, on average. Or you can step across the U.S. border and cut your tab to $250. That's the going rate for a crown at DentiCenter, a small but growing chain of full-service dental centers lining the U.S. border along California, Arizona and Texas. DentiCenter's six outposts are located in Mexico, but 97% of its patients come from the U.S.

Americans are increasingly willing to head across the border in search of a deal. Paul Keckley, executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions research group, estimates that dental tourism is increasing about 20% a year -- and the typical consumer is a middle-income American with insurance.

To attract American clients, Eng set out to make his practice mirror their experience in the U.S. His office in Tijuana, just a few hundred yards from the San Ysidro border at the edge of San Diego, is modern and immaculately clean, with nine bright, comfortable exam rooms. It looks and feels like a typical U.S. dental office -- except that the staff is Mexican and bilingual.

"I don't think this is going to end with the end of the recession," he says of the surge in dental tourism. "The cost of healthcare is becoming a major problem in every household. This is a trend, not a fad."

LINK

I know more than a few people personally that go to Mexico for all their dental work. People that have money and insurance, but refuse to pay the extortionist prices here in the US for the exact same care you can get for pennies on the dollar in Mexico. Guadalajara has some of the finest medical facilities and care available as well. Just as good, if not better than here in the US.

Time for America to get its shit together and stop being so fucking greedy, or guess what? People will take their business to other parts of the world... like they've been doing for a long, long time now.

Yeah, I pay $20... but it still doesn't cover shit. If I have to replace a crown, I'm looking at well over $1k per.

I have mine done here in Mexico by an American dentist.

BUT I don't think crossing the border in those areas are worth the savings right now.

I had a Root Canal Post and crown all done for 600$

I already have good dental insurance and would rather spend a bit more than to risk any 3rd world dentist

A "bit" more?

Think of this... for what it costs to get a root canal and a crown in the US... I could take a vacation to Cancun, AND get the same dental work done.

Yeah, just caught that. I meant, I would rather pay a bit more that my insurance does not cover VS dealing with a 3rd world dentist

Not sure what you have, but mine does cover a lot. First of all I get 2 free cleanings a year, which that alone costs more than I pay in insurance. All of the preventive stuff is free like xrays and some fillings is free. The wife had a root canal and the bill would have been around $800 w/o insurance, we paid $250. All for $25 a month (for both of us). With the insurance the prices are pretty reasonable, and if I had to fly to Mexico that would cost a lot more.

Why would that matter? The Gov isn't paying for dental care either way, and the right would never allow it anyway because of their fear of "Socialism!"

No, no, no, to do it right you need to illegally cross the border, sign up for Mexico's state provided healthcare then get your dental work done for free.

We have state-provided dental care here? Where do I sign up?

That sounds about like what mine covers... not much. The last root canal (on a single tooth) I had to get here was about a year ago, and it was $1400 (after a discount).

The dental care here is great, my dentist is super professional and has all extremely modern equipment etc... And provides quality service at a fraction of the prices americans pay. Reminds me, I have to go in for a checkup.

It's too bad that americans equate overspending to receiving a quality service.

Yep, and more and more people are going overseas for medical procedures at a fraction of the cost as well. Especially to countries like India.

But back to the dental thing...Don't worry. We won't be able to go to Mexico to pick up cheap prescription drugs or get your dental work done cheap much longer.
We are gonna put troops on the border and a wall to keep the horrible Mexicans out! (keep us in)

our dentist is in Cancun and he's top of the line. He works 15 days a month in New York, and the other 15 in Cancun. He has all the certifications in both the US and Mexico and personally, he's the best I've ever had. Plus the price is 50% what it would cost in the US.

But, but...that can't be!
Only the United States has the best care for health and dental!
And there aren't any bad dentists here in the U.S.!

Everybody that lives here says so! The news tells us so.

And they spend billions of dollars with lobbyists bribing the U.S. government to make sure we overpay for everything to make sure we all realize just how great our doctors and dentists are and how crappy every other civilized countries doctors and dentists are.

Hell...our shit is so damn good that we pay 10 times the price just for the same EXACT prescription drugs! Shitty little Mexico can't do THAT!

Hah! We rule!

In San Diego..this is normal. The Dentist offices Americans use down there look no different then they do here, and the dentists they use are all trained in the US.

My wife works as a litigator for insurance companies. False claims and people trying to get rich on false or flimsy lawsuits looking for millions in made up restitutions account for the majority of the cost. I have a friend who is a doctor and he has to pay 1 million a year in insurance fees for malpractice even though he has never lost a malpractice case.

A million coverage is not that much. We have to have a million on each vehicle that enters any property to do work. That seems to be the standard now days, but some require even more insurance and I have had no claims since we opened the doors.

The one I really love is additionally insured, that is plain BS.

My wife had 4 wisdom teeth pulled and 1 molar pulled plus biopsy done last year, we had no insurance and it was about 3k

On a side note my wife was out of town visiting relatives and had to goto the hospital a couple months ago for a couple hours, had an infection in her urinary tract, hospital and doctors billed my insurance about 10k, since i have a high deductable it cost about 3k+ after insurance.

He didn't say 1 million coverage, he meant he paid a million dollars for his insurance... I'm sure he's covered for like $100 million.

I think you read it wrong. The original price was $800 without insurance, my insurance company knocked it down to $250. All I paid for her root canal + xrays, cleaning, etc... was $250.

For $25 a month for both of us, I got an $600 savings from 1 dental incident... hell I am ahead of the game for the next 2 years vs the cost of my insurance. Mexico probably charges more for a root canal then I paid with my insurance.

It's too bad that americans equate overspending to receiving a quality service.
You also have to take in the cost of living of where you are at. A dentist in Mexico or central america can live like a king for a fraction of the cost vs living in SoCal for example. Also, I bet there isn't any malpractice insurance in those countries, so the dentist doesn't have to pay out of the ass for his own insurance. Which also means if they fuck up your mouth, you fucked. Where in the US you have recourse at least.

It's all relative, and not so much the US's fault, like the Dentist here are greedy or the "but I can go to Mexico and get is 1/2 price what the fuck is wrong with you, USA" mentality some of you have.

If a dentist in the US has to pay 5K a month in rent for his office, and a dentist in Mexico has to pay 1K a month rent. The dentist in US has to pay $15 hour for dental assistants, the one in Mexico pays $5 hour, etc... You get it? Even their own houses, A dentist in socal might pay 1 Million for a house, the one in Mexico can get a nicer house for 250K. So yeah, of course the one in Mexico can charge a lot less, because he doesn't need to make as much money to still live better than the dentist in the US.

check out Aetna health with the dental rider. Aetna was very competitve with the health rates and the dental rider was only $13 more for an individual and $25 for couple. By far the best deal I could find and I shopped several different companies.

3rd world? Are you basing that on anything other than your bias?

I know its very hard for some people to believe until they actually see it but the medical and dental care is very good in Mexico and it costs a fraction of what we pay here.

Every country has its shitty parts. Compton isn't exactly Glamour Town either. Nogales just happens to be a shit hole border town.

So now Mexico can be famous for tacos, blowjobs, drug smuggling and the world's finest quality dental care at affordable prices.
