U.S. issues European travel alert

Quote:
The U.S. State Department has issued an alert for Americans travelling in Europe, warning them there is a greater potential that al-Qaeda may launch attacks against U.S. citizens and Europeans.

Authorities are concerned that militants may be planning co-ordinated attacks similar to the Mumbai shooting rampage in 2008.

The alert does not focus on any particular areas of Europe but urges U.S. citizens to be extra vigilant when they're in public places such as tourist spots and transportation hubs.

Considering I'm sure most of the world did this to the States after 9/11, this should be pretty much expected after the recent attacks in Europe. Sorry Euro friends, you are not immune to the extremist Muslim hatred of America.

If Boston was not in the US, the State Dept would issue a travel alert for Boston. Living out of the US you learn that the State Department, the embassies and the like are ignorant of any reality outside their gated compounds.

So the United States issues travel advisories to remind Americans that it's safe in the United States due to our high level of security, so that they don't demand freedom back?

That's an interesting theory. Not that anyone even pays attention to travel advisories to begin with.

WE all have lost part of our freedom because OUR goverments have put up lots of bullshit regulations after 9/11 that are supposed to make us safer but only make us more exposed to those that we elected and that were supposed to take care of us. they do, but not the way they should.

has any of you two recenty travelled TO the US? you would be surprised with how many questions immigration can come up with.

read about SWIFT or why the US demands all personal data of all people who travel to the US before they even step on the plane.

but it's not the US alone, just look at the insane amounts of cameras in England or the ideas of the german government about monitoring and recording data of all internet activity.

everything because of the "terrorist threat" and people comply cause they think they are safer this way.

i could go on for a while but i am not wasting my sunday on that.

Of course. Because we all know terrorists and terror attacks do not really exist.

Well...in my case...I do not travel internationally anymore...and I do not fly domestically anymore...and a small part of the reason is because of the additional bullshit that one has to go through...to do both...but the freedom to travel internationally is still there and the freedom to travel domestically is still there (at least in the U.S.).

Other than the additional hassle in international travel and domestic commercial flight...I for one am not aware of any loss of freedom since 9/11. I do the very same things that I did prior to 9/11.

And if they didn't government would invent them, so they can have more publicly supported fear. ( Who knows maybe they did invent them)

In my life I have seen an erosion of individual freedom in the US I would not have imagined possible. The magic of using fear to have people consent to about anything is not a new concept but it is being used with mastery in the US now.

A short list, in the past.

I felt secure in my home without fear of police charging in because someone reported I was smoking a joint.
I recall going into an airport without feeling like a suspect.
I remember being able to have a few drinks with friends and not fear driving home.
I recall when the government listening to my communications required a warrant.
I recall when immigration and customs did not interrogate me each time I entered the country.
I recall being able to move money internationally without the IRS wanting notice.
I recall driving with out surveillance cameras on many roads.
I recall not being a criminal for hiring an undocumented person, never needed to check documents.
I recall when government, especially the federal government was not prying into my life, keeping files and records.

I recall life before the two recent futile wars, the war on drugs, and the war against terror. Both of these provide government with unlimited justification to stick their noses into everyones life.

I don't pay much attention to this "terror alert", have more important things in my life going on. Once you give into fear "they" have won.

I am in my fifties and it is my opinion that most states...if not all...have relaxed marijuana laws.

I recall going into an airport without feeling like a suspect.

The hassle of flying commercially has been increased but one still has the freedom to fly commercially.

I remember being able to have a few drinks with friends and not fear driving home.

Drinking and driving penalties have been increased in my lifetime...as they should have ...in my opinion.

I recall when the government listening to my communications required a warrant.

To my knowledge it still requires judicial oversight.

I recall when immigration and customs did not interrogate me each time I entered the country.

I have always been "interrogated" when I have entered the country...but there are more questions asked this day and age.

I recall being able to move money internationally without the IRS wanting notice.

As I recall...in my lifetime...there has always been a sum of money that brought notice to the IRS.

I recall driving with out surveillance cameras on many roads.

The number of traffic cameras have increased...but I view this as a good thing.

I recall not being a criminal for hiring an undocumented person, never needed to check documents.

To may knowledge...in my lifetime...it has always been a crime to hire an illegal immigrant.

I recall when government, especially the federal government was not prying into my life, keeping files and records.

To my knowledge...in my lifetime...the government has always kept records on citizens.

I recall life before the two recent futile wars, the war on drugs, and the war against terror. Both of these provide government with unlimited justification to stick their noses into everyone's life.

I agree that the government has increased its powers...they are not unlimited powers...in an attempt to curtail those that engage in illegal activities...which I think is a good thing.
My response.

the simple fact is we live in a society with rules. the reasons for the rules should be obvious. if you don't like the rules, you are free to go live in the woods/as far away from society as possible.

The dilemma is that as governments impose more rules, more restrictions, they do it at the expense of individual freedom. The tea baggers have that part right, they of course blend it with ignorance and prejudice, that makes them even worse that the current status.

Yes, I did vote with my feet and no longer live in the, "The land of the free, the home of the brave". Sad because I and many others gave much to protect those fundamental freedoms on which the republic was founded.

well, i tend to think we should allow drunk drivers on the roads, let people walk onto airplanes unchecked, let anyone enter the country without identification, and hire illegal immigrants without consequences. that would be good for society.

Okay, that is hilarious. It seems that most of those things you are complaining about are more prevalent in the EU than the US.

Just saying.

CBC has been reporting it for at least a week. Seems our US cousins/bros never get the real news.

The government can hardly help themselves now, it's just too fun rapping on the "FEAR" button.

Taking away rights and freedoms has never been so easy!

It is propaganda. This news story hit several websites before Sunday and all said the US department would make an announcement.
So they were tipped off by the spokes who feed them the information.

For ten minutes now, I am trying to find that announcement on the US Department of State website.

It's all bogus.

Most European countries have been dealing with terrorism for much longer than 9/11.
The only difference is that the terrorists are now Islamic and not home-grown.

FYI, it's been reported around the world even before that brainlack. But of course the US media...well that's another story. Get out of the box....or rather FOX

keep ASSuming, it's a good look for you.

fact is, it was officially released as an alert today.

either way, big fucking whoopie, it's an alert, not even a warning.

you paranoid retards can spin it all you want but it's simply an alert.

Sure...but those ALERTS seem a little more prevalent these days since 9/11. I wonder why.

And if all kittens grew laser beams on their heads and started killing people...

We are not talking about fantasy and what might be, "if...".

The point is that there is a problem. Government gets blamed for not stopping terror acts or warning people. Government gets blamed for warning people and stopping attacks. You think travel warnings to Mexico are a fabrication? Or do you think its because ex paramilitaries who became drug lords are patrolling cities and cutting off heads of teachers and putting them in front of schools?

Nothing changed in your life but your perceptions of what is.

No it was not...what was reported...just as it was reported here...that an alert was going to be released...and now it has been released.
