I'm configuring a notebook (M6500) on the Dell site and the base model comes with 4GB of Ram. The additional cost to upgrade to "16.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS" is $991.00 but if you want to add another 16GB and go for the "32.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS" option the additional cost is $8,595.00. Why would the second 16GB cost more than 8 times that of the first 16GB? BTW, these prices are referring only to the cost of the actual memory upgrade and do not include the cost of the actual system itself. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

the bigger the stick the more $$$$ it costs.

example a 4 gig stick might cost $100 but a 8 gig stick costs $300

Yeah I get that but in your example you're doubling your memory from 4GB to 8GB at roughly 3 times the cost (which seems fairly reasonable). However, on the Dell site doubling the memory from 16GB to 32GB is more than 8 times the cost. That just doesn't seem to add up?

Probably because they think if you are going to buy from Dell and spec it up to 32 you aren't going to realise you could buy the 4x8 yourself much cheaper.

buying memory upgrades from dell is stupid so it dont matter what their website says

I hate to open up a lap top for anything, even something as simple as a memory upgrade. But I'll definitely take a look at their pricing. Thanks for the suggestion.

why be scared of that, the manufacturers make them pretty easy to open for simple things like ram upgrades

Looks like the max is 16, must be some special customization to get it to 32, 16 is plenty imho

definitely easy. It's probably one or two screws, then the memory pulls right out. The manual or the internet will have instructions.

Adding memory doesn't really involve opening it up. You pop open a little hatch, clip the new RAM in, bam.
