I saw Dunkirk last night - Review - No spoilers

Dunkirk is probably the most intense war movie I have ever seen. Pretty much from the first scene to the final one I found myself pressed into my seat with sweaty palms throughout the whole thing.

Also it is quite possibly the best sound editing and movie score I have ever heard. I compare all WW2 movies to Saving Private Ryan. While its not gruesome like Saving Private Ryan it still delivers the terror of war. Also unlike Private Ryan there are no down times in the movie. Nolan does an awesome job of keeping things moving quickly from start to finish.

I saw it in 70mm and recommend it for the kick ass wide angle shots used for sea and landscape. I also recommend seeing it in the theatre, the sound is intense and almost ear shattering at times when planes are approaching.

Nice, thanks for sharing! My husband and I are taking his 83 year old father to see it this weekend. His Dad is quite excited about it, and from this review it sounds like he's going to really dig it.

My Grandad stormed the beaches at Dunkirk. It was a family story that he did a bit of fighting, but then got freaked right out and hid in a shed until it was all over. He was found by soldiers from our side who were looking for survivors.

I cant blame him really - He didn't choose to serve - He was conscripted so had no choice. A very small gentle weak man. I'm glad he chose to hide.

If he hadn't, I'd never have known him. He died of old age in a nursing home in 1991. It was just after my Son was born. We think he had been 'holding on' to see him...

RIP Grandad x

Just back from the Cinema and it was very very good.

It has personal connections for me as I knew men who were on that beach and came back. Friends of my uncle, who was meant to go but was held back from going. He was an engineer and needed at home. Two of his friends went. I met them when I was young.

Not to take away from your grandfather's service to his country but no beaches were stormed at Dunkirk, 4 years later at Normandy they were. British, French and Belgian forces were trapped in Dunkirk, outflanked by the Germans in all directions. It was a hopeless situation and only a decision by one of Hitler's generals with Hitler's ok to call a halt for 3 days saved 300,000 soldiers from death or imprisonment as POWs. That decision is still debated by historians - some say it was Hitler giving a break to the British in the hopes he could reach a peace agreement with them. In fact Hitler wrote in the political testament he wrote not long before the end for him and the war that's exactly what he did, he was showing mercy to Britain. The Brits were seriously considering surrendering to Hitler even before the Dunkirk evacuation. Had the evacuation been impossible there is little doubt the Brits would have cut a deal with Hitler. Churchill used the miracle of Dunkirk to rally the faith of the British people to not give up and to fight on.
Losing 200,000 men at Dunkirk would have been too much both militarily and psychologically.

It was refreshing to watch a film that didn't contain CGI to the extreme or was about super heroes.

So much death and destruction could have been avoided in WWII had France and Britain not put blinders on regarding Hitler. They knew what he was going to do but they hoped against hope that somehow war could be avoided, it was irrational. At the Nuremberg Trials where the surviving Nazi and German military leaders were tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity the top 2 generals who ran the war under directives from Hitler, Keitel and Jodl, both in their testimony said that at the time Hitler attacked Poland that Germany could not even think about war vs Britain and/or France, they were undermanned and out-armed at that point. Britain and France rather than remaining paralyzed could have stopped Hitler in his tracks. Thrown him in prison or better yet killed him, broken up the Nazi party and disarmed Germany once and for all.

I haven't seen the movie nor read any reviews. Did they show the pamphlets the Luftwaffe dropped on the British and French soldiers? Here are two of them, the French one blames France's problems on England. Hitler was pure evil and so fucked in the head though to say he was mentally ill would be wrong and would provide an excuse for his evilness. He became a vegetarian, he could torture and kill human beings all day all night long but animals he couldn't bear see suffer. His only intimate relationships were both with girls 30 years younger than himself, the first one being his fucking niece who killed herself and then Eva Braun who also tried killing herself. He kept these relationships a secret from the German people because he wanted them to think of him as a warrior god, not some regular shmuck with a wife and children.

Got to see it in regular aspect ration 70mm today. The time shifting was little hard to follow, but I love watching Christopher Nolan do his thing. The score was one of Hans Zimmer's best.

Going to the full frame IMAX 15/70mm next week.
