World's Biggest Coal Company Closes 37 Mines as Solar Prices Plummet
The rapid growth in renewable energy continues to put a dent in the demand for coal.

Coal India, the world's biggest coal mining company and producer of 82 percent of the country's coal, announced the closure of 37 mines that are financially "unviable."

The sites make up roughly nine percent of the total mines operated by Coal India. The company is expected save Rs 800 crore ($124 million) from the closures.

India's energy market is undergoing a rapid transformation as it moves away from fossil fuels. Last month, the country cancelled plans to build nearly 14 gigawatts of coal-fired power stations.

Notably, solar has been cheaper than coal-based electricity in India for the past several months. According to Quartz:

"At an auction for 500 megawatt (MW) of capacity at the park on May 12, the state-run Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) managed to discover a record-low tariff of Rs 2.44 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The previous low was two days before that when tariffs hit Rs 2.62 per kWh during auctions for another phase of Bhadla solar park.

"The country's largest power company, NTPC, sells electricity from its coal-based generation units at a princely Rs 3.20 per kWh."

The National Thermal Power Corporation of India said that the country currently hosts a solar power capacity of 845 megawatts, after the recent addition of a 225 megawatt solar farm, the Mandsaur Solar Power Project.

USA does not need to worry about this shit, they can easily compete against countries that use clean free energy by using fossil fuels.

Only dumb libs think that populations around the world are demanding cleaner and more organic foods and that's why Trump is making America future proof by increasing fossil fuel production cutting funds to green projects and rolling back those pesky regulations that stop mercury and the likes being dumped in rivers.

Who gives a fuck what your children will inherit when you can make a billion today!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong with that assumption

Sounds about right -- jobs for coal miners and oil workers MAGA. Trump is a big man in the oil patch and the coal mines BIGLY big!

Most American businesses are ignoring his stupidity FYI.

india is huge and this is a big big win for the planet...theres a billion of them and they are energy hungry...moving away from coal to solar is huge news IRL...

other countries are bound to follow, if it is cheap enough in india then china is not too far away...it is only a matter of time before they drop a few hundred billion on it like absolute bosses...

I hope this gives a redhat an anal fissure...

It's not a great thing. However, it's already been proven in Denmark that the only way Tesla can sell cars is with government subsidies. Governments shouldn't be subsidizing any industry. Remove those and whatever comes out on top is the best solution.

coal is on the way out and being replaced by renewables. Trump is stupid to try and stop it. He should be looking to save jobs going to China, Russia, etc.

while eventually tragic for the individual that loses his job, there are hundreds of professions that do not exist anymore cause they became obsolete over the centuries.

Yep like the north of England, when the pits closed, it took 20 odd years to get employment levels back up with new industries.

xx,xxx thousands of people in one area suddenly without work, that always causes problems.

its not effective for businesses, but for the environment its a good choice. Eventually things are going to have to change if we keep screwing up our atmosphere the rate we are doing so now. Regardless, solar energy is most likely going to end up taking over coal at some point.
