loool! agreed! I can see all kinds of holes in this idea... at the same time, if that contraption actually works, it's an engineering marvel.

would be one hell of a coincidence if it's not the same Deloran btw..

I took some ultralight flying lessons, the type with the hang-glider with a motor at the back...shit my pants when I got hit by crosswinds...will never fly again...I am nevertheless sure that people will die like rabbits with these flying things...half of homosapiens do not deserve a driving license...let alone flying...

What you should remember is that with the advent of drones and the computer controlled technology most of the flying will be done via the software programs leaving very little margin for error ? Nothing is 100% foolproof but technology is improving by huge increments each year. Give it a year or two and I'm sure we will see vehicles like this take to the air.

Flying car companies fail

The biggest reason flying car and personal small airplanes fail is economics, not vehicle quality.
Most of these companies start with a small initial capital funding. They then print fancy brochures, take orders and advance deposits. The goal is to raise enough cash to produce the 1st round of vehicles. The plan requires the vehicles built, a profit for the investors and money for round 2.
But orders come in slowly. Capital is eaten up in marking and salaries. Many don't even end up with enough capital to do the 1st production run.
DeLoren made it through round run. They just couldn't keep capital flowing in to keep production going.
I was asked by an initial capital raiser to apply to be senior account. After reading their financials, marketing and production plans, it was obvious they would have trouble producing round 1

A lot of these are made with composite materials, that have to be made at one time. You have to mix a batch of chemicals and do it all at once. You have to produce a certain amount at one time. You can't make a batch for each vehicle.

NAILED IT! This will be the next revolution in personal travel...I said it the day I got my Phantom Drone a few years back....it will take off, fly and land itself....and think about, people talking about self driving cars...this is WAY easier to do than a self driving car....

I doubt DeLorean will be the industry leader but drones are the future of transportation...specially with Battery tech getting better and better

And there is no reason that these cant be sold for a price similar to medium priced automobiles...the electric motors are inexpensive, as is the body materials, computing necessities and software

I don't agree with this statement as people like Lamborghini use high tech carbon fiber materials that are cured under vacuum in an autoclave, they can do as few as one part or a thousand parts at one time. You mix just enough resin for your needs, all of the current resins have a 6 month shelf life as a minimum.

If Delorean gave me an STL file i could carve a plug for this vehicle in less than 400 hours on my CNC machines and spray primer, polish and produce molds in a further 8 weeks ready for production. The real skill and what takes time and money is the design and model testing, months or years are spent proving theorys.

Lamborghini is not a startup and has capital. These are underfunded startups. Even just building the engines, they have to batch produce to gain economy of scale. A lot of their initial capital was producing the prototype.

We had that in the hologram company. One hologram costs $5,000. The next 10,000 we'll sell you for a penny apiece. Setup costs for the plate and production run.
