SEO - do we still benefit from limiting outgoing links aka "juice out"?

Is this still important?
Links in vs links out (aka "juices going out") was big concept in seo years ago.
Is it still valid in todays seo game where lots of principles have changed (like more weight is given to user behavior on site than many years ago as an example)?

Take a directory style website as an example.
Each entry can have a link out to that company's website or it could not have. Having a link out gives more beneft for company to want to list at that directory, but will it give negatve effect to directory in terms of extra link juice out?

Sure bro.
The more outgoing links a page has, the less link juice each link receives.
You can put rel=nofollow to outgoing links to keep link juice follow in your site only ;)

Who knows. Although if you focus on it and take the time to optimize all your sites using that particular strategy, Google will have changed the algo rendering that strategy useless.

'Most' seo efforts will soon be a waste of time.

Limit amount of outgoing links on your site - good idea
Putting nofollow tag in order to gain same effect - bad idea, google wont distribute seo juice just because you use nofollow tag. It was a thing called "juice scalping" and google wanted people to stop doing that.

So no follow tag is useless (as in ignored by search engines)?

You don't have a better solution except limiting a number of links. I using it on affiliate links

No. He is saying, if you use no follow tags on your site in an effort to send juice only to certain pages on your site, Google figured this out. So say perhaps that archives and category links on your blog are all no follow to not spread juice away from blog posts and the home page. Now Google will say, well, I'm just going to pretend those were do follow when taking away points from your pages that reference those links. Thereby limiting the effectiveness of such strategies.

A no follow to an outbound link will be no follow for that guy. But will still count against your page that linked out as if it was do follow.

Wow, this is breaking news for me (and for majority of webmasters) and against all popular belief. Can not believe that for you it would be the same as if you do followed those links. Why would anyone do nofollow to outbound links if you don't gain anything (like saving juice for yourself)? Just to spite owners of those URLs? (Except f they are direct competitors, then "spiting" them would make some sense, but otherwise...)

It's been ages since that update. And yes, nofollow tag is now more less useless, you can eventually use it you sell "traffic links" as a proof how they are not backlinks but just for traffic.

It is still relevant. Our backlinks service is based around the client getting inlinks without adding any outlinks to their websites.
