McDonald's is making Happy Meals healthier.
By 2022, cheeseburgers won't be part of the menu for the kids' meals, although parents can still ask for them. The main choices will be hamburgers and four- and six-piece Chicken McNuggets. And the French fry sizes will be smaller.

Bottled water will be added to Happy Meals later this year, and chocolate milk will come with less sugar. McDonald's also pledged to serve more fruits, vegetables and grains.

All Happy Meals in the United States will have 600 calories or less by June, and at least half of stores and drive-throughs around the world will meet that target by 2022. McDonald's says the calorie count in an average Happy Meal will come down 20%.

The company also said Thursday it will "reinforce responsible marketing to children," in a statement Thursday.

I always order just the hamburger. About $1 to $1.25 usd. In lots of places that option is not even on the visible menu.

I see many people ordering the big meals with fries and soda, etc., and pondering over the menu like they're in a real restaurant. That's the primary customer. People who feel "uncomfortable" in a real restaurant like Applebees.

i live in holland, and fries have been our local snack long before mcdonalds made their half assed attempt... if you get your fries at our real dutch 'snackbars', local ones or dutch chains, you get real fries how they should taste. About a 100 times better and actually very tasty, instead of those tasteless thin sloppy cardboard mickey d fries... ugh

600 is still too many calories, especially when they are garbage calories. They will still be garbage calories even with the introduction of better options because mom and dad will allow the kids to get upgrades and slather sugar rich ketchup on the burger and fries.

Kids should not be eating meals like this for more than a special treat. Parents that give their kids these meals on a regular basis need to question what they are doing for the long-term health of the child, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally.

Fast food is BAD. Tasty? Yes, it's supposed to be. As an adult, you need to know what the limits are and enforce them. Kids will not understand. "No" is a very good word.

BS... the burger from mcDonalds can be and is probably healthier than some restaurants.

We eat out most days through summer, restaurants, tapas bars, fast food restaurants & some dives...

we go all over for paella, fish, meat, you name it...

but the big mac is still the tastiest & cheapest burger, and when you check the meat product and salad, it´s the healthiest too

I call BS... you saw someone in the cook area then in the cash area?

Applebees has become a joke. I remember when going to TGIF Fridays was special and, they actually had ovens. Now, it is all the same garbage you can pick up in the freezer section of a grocery store, microwaved. What is truly amazing is that people accept this garbage.

The nice-looking burger is from JG Melon. It's a straightforward pub burger. Very consistent, always delicious. It's one of my favorite burgers in NYC. In no particular order:

1. JG Melon
2. Corner Bistro
3. Keen's Chophouse (at the bar)
4. Donovan's (Queens)
5. Peter Luger's (lunch only)

TGI Fridays was where I first had loaded potato skins. Awesome! Not so much anymore. A bit of trivia: the original TGI Fridays was a notorious singles bar on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Them and Maxwell's Plum were THE place to be when looking for action in the 70s. Then it was bought out by Restaurant Associates and slowly morphed into what it has become.

That's the way to do it. A good mix of beef - I like a blend of ground short ribs, chuck and brisket - course salt and cracked pepper. Seared over the high heat of a grill or cast iron skillet. One of life's simple pleasures!

To be fair that McDonald's burger is not on their Dollar Menu.

i don't know if i would go so far to say that i love it but i never found a problem with it myself. I do know if i eat it too often i don't feel that great and that it isn't really full of a lot of nutrients.

People tend to equate mcdonalds with being overweight, which is ridiculous. There are a handful of you in this thread that haven't eaten at a mcdonalds in years and are still overweight and out of shape. the two aren't related. It's not that healthy no, but there is plenty of 'healthy food' that makes you fat and sick too--and no it isn't meat either.

haha you make a fair point, i forgot we were talking about happy meals here. For the record no i don't think children should be eating this with any frequency. Too many empty calories and preservatives, which is worse for children who are still growing a base nutrition with organs, bones and brain development. But most of us grew up on hotdogs and bologne so its not really the end of the world either.

To be fair, people are going to eat how they want. It's up to no one to judge. I'd like to see healthier options. Good food, the way it should be made, is much yummier. I've been a vegetarian for many years. However, I will make meat dishes for friends and, family. Every time I've cooked for someone who doesn't usually eat healthy, on the first bite of a grass fed, locally raised meat source or, wild caught fish (Ordered from cold waters) they say something along the line of, "Wow, this is amazing." People can tell good food when they get it. My kids and, grand kids would choose healthy food over what they are passing off in school cafeterias any day. They can tell the difference between locally raised, free range eggs and, me being in a pinch and, picking them up from the grocery store. Micky D's used to be a guilty pleasure, now it is just kind of gross. My opinion anyway. But, taking the cheese (Or what they are calling their fake cheese) off what they call a burger to make it more healthy is laughable.

like today, I was out in the sun, a choice with our friend to go McDonalds, come back and maybe do bbq or eat pastries, but we chose fresh pizza from a Spanish pizza restaurant, took it 2mins across to the local beach & sat exactly here eating fresh pizza...



it´s maybe once every couple of weeks & let´s get this also in prospective. The McDonalds egg and sausage mc muffin for breakfasts have fresh poached egg and a lovely taste to their sausage! Again, healthy & so, so, so tasty
