21 inch.

Where's the fucking text editor?

:1orglaugh

iSpyCams 08-12-2015 10:07 AM

Finder > Applications > TextEdit

Drag it down to the launch bar for quick access later.

Also look for sublime text for mac. I don't use it yet, but I love notepad++ on Windows and I understand that's the closest thing on Mac.

Sly 08-12-2015 10:08 AM

TextMate is better, but I mostly use Brackets for everything between coding and notes. Sublime Text every now and then. Tried Atom but did not play with it enough to get a good feeling, seems nice.

AdultKing 08-12-2015 10:12 AM

TextEdit is the default text editor.

panic.com sell Coda which is what I use.

There's also BBEdit which is popular amongst some people.

L-Pink 08-12-2015 10:25 AM

Nice choice.

Make sure to get a wireless non-mac mouse with scroll and right click.

The wireless Magic Mouse that comes with it has scroll and right click. You just enable right click in System Preferences.

I had a :1orglaugh in my post because I made sure I found it before I admitted that I couldn't find it.

Correct; L-pinky doesn't read his manual, he just makes sure his computer connects to gfy and throws the rest of the shit out.

I was actually referring to the larger style/type mouse that fits better in manly hands.

Congrats on the new machine, I didn't know apple stores were in riot areas.

No mouse comes close to the Magic Mouse :)

The magic mouse supports gestures like an iPhone, so you can scroll, swipe, zoom, pinch etc. There's no button, just a plexiglass surface that the whole body clicks down for a click.

rastan 08-12-2015 02:44 PM

I dunno, I still prefer to use a basic Microsoft wired mouse with my Mac Pro. I never really did get on with the official Apple one. Kinda sacrelige to add a Microsoft peripheral to an Apple machine, but just goes to show the kids can play nicely together! 8)

If you didn't adjust the mouse settings then you may like it more than you think.
I put the "mouse tracking" to max and that gave me what I wanted.

How'd it feel spending 2x+ on a desktop

The value of a Mac can't be measured in dollars unless you're including the value of the immensely improved productivity, especially if you're a programmer/coder.

Having Unix under the hood, being able to install any Unix package, being POSIX compliant, being able to open up a terminal window and ssh without having to install shitty clients like Putty.

Then add the best productivity that exists for any operating system and you've got a really good value machine.

MiamiBoyz 08-12-2015 03:14 PM

I myself have dabbled in the dark side from time to time over the years and I have always come back.

Hope your experience is better than mine have been and I wish you the best (you are gonna need all the positive vibes you can get)!

I felt extremely excited knowing that this imac will be the workhorse for some extreme development I plan to undertake.

One of us! One of us! One of us! One of us!

Here's a great text editor : Bare Bones Software | BBEdit 11 perfect for creating and editing HTML, css etc.

And if you haven't done it yet, go into you mouse settings (Click "System Preferences" (the thing that looks like a gear box) then mouse, enable "Secondary Click", and then un-check "Scroll Direction: Natural". For me this makes mouse movement for natural.

Homebrew.

Homebrew — The missing package manager for OS X

try doing that on a Windows machine.

If you're going to get into Laravel then using composer etc on the Mac is a breeze :)

RyuLion 08-12-2015 04:35 PM

I'm still not buying any Apple products, I'm fine with my PCs and Android..
Freedom of choice FTW!!

blackmonsters 08-12-2015 05:31 PM

I just opened "Garage Band" that comes installed.
It's comparable to Presonus Studio One software.

That's a nice piece of software for free!

Well, it's not actually free...it's included.

You only get it if you buy the computer and it's part of the software included.

You paid for it...

Walk into an Apple store and ask for it...not so "free". :thumbsup

True, and we get more by paying more.

This magic mouse is pretty slick I have to admit.

Been using it since I started on the Mac in 1992. I have tried all the others but always come back to it.
I didn't have you figured an old school guy. For someone who makes the right choices in computers I have no idea why your political views are so f*cked up.

How so? It has been proven and proven that for the same price you get more by not going with apple (and its biggest markup in the market).
Except the magical IOS is "better" argument.

arock10 08-12-2015 07:28 PM

Pre OS X was better then OS X came out which was just shitty windows and I switched to windows.

I like my iphone though and do most of my work on it these days ;)

It's OS X and yes it's better.

Here's why.

A fully compliant POSIX Unix under the hood.
Better memory management.
Better Productivity Apps
All Adobe Apps run better on OS X than on Windows
Microsoft Office for Mac is better than the Windows version.
If I want to ssh to a server I just open a terminal window and do it - no shitty Putty required.
It comes with included Apps.
If it's the iMac then it's the smallest form factor computer you can buy.
The iMac inbuilt monitor is better than any 3rd party PC monitor I have seen or used.
It has a FREE and complete development environment that can be used to create apps for sale on the App Store - the most profitable App store there is.

Want me to go on ?

The Mac is just better than the alternatives, especially if you're a developer.

Go to your windows machine and compile ffmpeg with flaac support and MP4Box - unless you spend a day installing kludge based development tools, you can't without a lot of effort - you need to use a binary which may or may not suit your needs.

Got the Bash shell on your PC ? Does the Windows machine run MarsEdit for managing multiple blogs ?

There's no comparison.

(Yes I have two Windows machines and several Macs so I can share an informed opinion)

You know more about Macs than I do, and I worked there for 2 years writing kBase articles and training for tech support.. :upsidedow

blackmonsters 08-13-2015 07:41 AM

I was able to set up the free text editor for ubuntu, Gedit.

Runs nice with all the features.

You have to download gedit and install it; but it will be stopped from installing and then
you open privacy/security (systems preference) and click "open gedit".

You need to set up the system paths to run getit :

Programming Tips: Run gedit on Mac OS terminal

Use the search at the top right of you mac to find the terminal and then double click it to run those commands.

It took me a couple of tries on the install but it's working now.

You should be installing these as packages from brew.

Visit Homebrew ? The missing package manager for OS X

It will make life easier.

I started using NextStep Version 0.8 on a Cube in 1989 which is the ancestor of OS X.

If the main value for you is in the OS, why didn't you just build a hackintosh? I'm considering switching from windows to linux on my work pc (on home one keeping windows for sure, i still play games sometimes)

Simple, the iMac is no larger than a normal 27" display and probably smaller in depth than many of those. The build quality is better than anything you could build yourself and the display itself is awesome. I have the iMac and another 27" Apple Display side by side. No box needed.
