Pirate Bay has been shut down by Swedish court

Today, Stockholm’s district court took action to completely remove The Pirate Bay from the Internet.

The court ordered the site’s major bandwidth supplier, Black Internet, to disconnect TPB from the Internet or face penalties of 500,000 kroner ($70,600). The ISP complied, saying that it had no choice but to uphold the law.

The censorship of The Pirate Bay will continue pending the outcome of a civil action taken by several entertainment companies including Disney, Universal, Warner, Columbia, Sony, NBC and Paramount.

Rick Falkvinge, leader of The Pirate Party said: “This is absolutely ridiculous. The Court seems to consider themselves above the Constitution,” while criticizing the effect that these civil actions are having on freedom of speech. “This clarifies how copyright law has become untenable, and how information is lacking political skills in the judiciary,” he added.

Black Internet is probably not the only supplier of bandwidth to The Pirate Bay, so it may be possible for them to reconnect to the Internet elsewhere. Whether or not another Swedish supplier would even consider doing that is seriously in doubt.
First the sale did apparantly not go through, which made some pirates happy, and now it has been shut down? What a twist. What a drama :)

Yes, there might be some delays in DNS. Or they move out of Sweden to another server. From here, the domain has been blocked for a long time by ISPs.

Fuck pirates ......

Agent 488 08-24-2009 09:47 AM

the great depression 2.0 - i mean great recession - is in some ways going to be a good time for ip as cash starved corporations and tax starved governments come down hard on online piracy in order to survive- which will be easier to do so with all the new post-crash global economic regulations and integrations.

Yes, but I don't think that is related?

Agent 488 08-24-2009 09:59 AM

wegcash should buy it.

brand0n 08-24-2009 10:01 AM

the .com redirects to the .org and both are down

Dirty Dane 08-24-2009 10:02 AM

They say in the article it has been relocated now.

You could expect that. But they flee and leave behind lots of shit. The Swedes lost their privacy and precedence has been made for ISPs in Sweden.

We'll never know probably what the actual influence of Hollywood, press, (foreign) governments, world wide industry of copyright holders, anti-copyright theft organisations, leaning on 3rd parties like hosting, etc. combined was on this..

kristin 08-24-2009 10:08 AM

Loads fine for me still.

I'm thinking that's just dns not finished yet. I can't get to .org or .com (not even sure if it was a .com or not because I purposefully wouldn't go there)

Where is gideongallery? :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh Time for him to come in here and make a bunch of excuses.

And though it's still early in all of this, this could very well be a turning point that could mean a lot of lost revenue coming back to all of us in the coming months.

camchoice 08-24-2009 10:17 AM

Damn why did he not just redirect that traffic to our wonderfull porn sites !
Alternatives people alternatives ! Download junkies out here !

:anon

Agent 488 08-24-2009 10:19 AM

is that about the company who was to buy pb?

it fell through because the company was full of shit and lied about their financials.

I just realized....whenever I have found my stuff on torrent sites in the past....many times it's just links to the stuff from TBP.

So that means that millions of full scenes just went down on thousands of smaller torrent sites who were mirroring tbp. :)

There might be MUCH more to it than just shutdown, if data is confiscated. They already lost privacy rights in Sweden, so I would not be surprised if pirates are in trouble now. At least the worst ones, like we saw in South Korea last week.

BOSS1 08-24-2009 10:23 AM

its a good day

PurrrsianPussyKat 08-24-2009 10:26 AM

Update: As expected, The Pirate Bay site relocated and is back online. A Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak that they “got a new connection to the net.” The tracker is still down and is expected to be fully operational tomorrow morning, we were told. Ever since their servers were raided back in 2006 they were prepared for takedown attempts like this.
