How safe is brazil? I naturally piss people off.

The company I used to work for would send a bodyguard with their employees who were traveling to Brazil.
I also heard they'll cut your finger off just to get your ring.

Brazil is about as safe as walking through south central LA with a "I hate niggas" sign ala Die Hard.

Sao Paulo is the third biggest city in the world, after Tokyo and Mexico City.

17 million inhabitants, 4 million automobiles and 10,000 miles of streets, make Sao Paulo one of the most congested cities in the world.

It has one of the worst crime rates in the world with 1500 murders last year, compared to New York's 671.

The good news is with 17 million people your odds of being killed are lower, but the bad news is if you steal some ho's... their pimp just might be a cop or the police chief.

Been several stories lately, about people kidnapping the mothers of brazilian soccer players and holding them for ransom, about a shooting spree that killed a bunch of people and some say it was the police, retaliating for something.

Two of my good friends, Nikkyblond and Renato were down there recently and had a blast tho. I've been invited and will get there one of the trips.

if you are white don't go out after about 8-9 pm.

stay close to your major hotels and try to walk with groups of people.

DO NOT WALK alone after dark.

DO NOT wear visible jewely, carry a camera, or cellphone.

the favella kids coming down the hill prey on tourists big-time. small bands of 12-16 years will have no trouble robbing you at knifepoint, and a few are dangerous.

Rio is VERY dangerous after dark.

i know 2 ppl who opened cam houses in Brazil....

1 got sent to prison, and another one had his house shot up by the police whom he didnt pay enough money to and drove him out of the country....

People have no idea how dangerous some of these countries can be for a gringo. The police are corrupt and fuck you up in a second. Huge numbers of people live way beyond the poverty level. Money is hard to come by and they ALL know you have it. Your life is worthless in places such as this.

BUT you can go and have a good time and be totally safe IF you are smart and keep to yourself.

not very safe at all man, but decent enough for tourist locations (rio,etc). just dont wander too far on your own.

ie - gangs tend to get their way, in fact at least 3 times in that I remember personally from the news gangs literally walked right into army/military bases to seize anything and everything they wanted. not much enforcement or legitimacy there, although that's what happens with corrupt leaders.

Very well said. If you want to play the tourist, Rio is not a good place. If you come, play by the rules and with a little luck you will be fine. Don't go walking around the beaches with your $3k digicam looking for girls to shoot. :pimp

And don't believe 90% what people are saying here. Most of them have never been to Brazil and are posting what they "heard".
