1st .XXX Site Goes Live - Who Cares?
 

Curious as to the predictions out there... although with ICANN allowing other TLD's it may just be another extraneous extension.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Casting.xxx became the first porn site to go live with a .XXX domain name.

It’s the first site to launch under ICM Registry’s Founder Program, which will allocate 1,500 domains to 35 “founders.” It went live this evening.

The first .xxx domains went live a couple of months ago... Of course, they went down soon after :)

Roughly 1,500 .xxx domains have been allocated to 35 porn companies, and many could go live ahead of the extension's official general launch, which is scheduled for early December.

"It's actually a perfect example of a Founders site," ICM president Stuart Lawley said of casting.xxx. "It's a generic name... but with a special niche in the .xxx world."

The company also recently announced the second of three initiatives aimed at building up the .xxx brand as a "safe" place to get your jollies – or not – on the web.

ICM has inked a multimillion dollar deal with San Francisco upstart MetaCert, a web-content classification service, to give surfers blocking options if they don't want to stumble onto porn.

MetaCert makes a free browser plug-in that can block sites and insert mouseover warnings into search engine results, based on its hosted database of known porn sites.

Under its deal with ICM, every .xxx site will be automatically labelled as adults-only in this database.

MetaCert chief executive Paul Walsh said the system uses the W3C labelling standard POWDER, which replaced PICS, an earlier standard which Walsh said is "completely broken".

The company, which is chaired by Salesforce.com chief scientist JP Rangaswami, plans to make money in part by selling privacy policy certificates to site owners inside and outside the porn business for half the price of TRUSTe, Walsh said.

So, IFFOR hasn't published its "best practices" or other policies yet, but .XXX domain holders can go ahead and launch their sites, accept transactions, etc?

I suppose one can't very well break rules that don't exist yet, but I had thought one of .XXX's main selling points was that IFFOR was going to provide oversight and ensure "responsibility" on the part of .XXX site operators.

I guess in the case of casting.xxx, the 'responsibility audit' will have to be applied retroactively. ;-)

I'm all for change.. but not this one. That's coming from someone who gets attached to good things easily. I think .xxx is a self-serving wolf in sheep's clothing candy-coated to appear as an industry-friendly service. The bells and whistles they've been boasting about are pacifications during their launch phase to hush the non-believers long enough to sink their teeth into the earth as much as possible.

Then again, that's assuming they aren't already fucked due to an impending lack of support after sunrise.
