ways to monetize escort directory?

Hi, I have 3 ideas:

1. Charge escorts listing fee ( how much are they willing to pay, maybe I will scare most of them by charging? )
2. Charge visitors - if they want to get a contact of any escort listed on my site they pay like 1$ by sms billing. Or maybe 5$ for all the contacts? Something like that.
3. Don't charge any of these and monetize only by advertising. But I don't see much money coming that way, even if you have decent traffic.
What kind of ads are relevant and would make me the most on escort directory?

Thank You in advance for any advice

I would choose option 2.

Charging visitors = bad idea, they'll go elsewhere and then so will the escorts.
Charging escorts - only if it's for something over and above what you give them now, such as more prominent ads.
Advertising - you have guys here willing to pay for sex so you should be able to sell them dating, swingers, personality pornsites, etc.

What he said but make sure the traffic is there first.

I was looking into this not too long ago and I noticed a lot of escorts are using a 3rd party verification site to screen customers before they will see them, and several of these verification sites do have affiliate programs. I scrapped the idea and tossed all my research, but check some of the big escort sites and backpage.com and you will see what I mean...

I'll buy some ads from you! :pimp

I will keep you in mind when I'll grow up in traffic. What do you think about my original question and those 3 possible monetization strategies by the way?

mineistaken 12-09-2010 04:08 PM

No escort directory owners willing to respond? :)

You're putting the cart before the horse.

If you don't have that much traffic currently you need to first build it up. Make it free for everyone and build a consistent user base that has a quality user experience. Then you can look to monetize.

Ok lets asume I already have the traffic. What would you recommend then?
I am just planning two steps forward here. I don't want to ask that question when I am on that step, I want to already have the plan and execute it. Thats why I am asking now.

I would build it up and follow the CraigsList approach. Charge the escorts a small fee to list a basic ad and then do premium add ons (like linking to a bio page etc).

Make it free to the users. Perhaps you could institute a "freemium" approach. It's free but if they want to see all of the escorts info they have to pay a monthly fee. Ala ESPN insider. But charging the users anything should come after the site has gained a large following (if at all).

Contact the agencies directly for premium placement

like people said above, relevant things to escorts are dating, and maybe even cams.

People browsing the site are probably looking for more than porn....

Axzar 12-09-2010 09:59 PM

What is your directory URL?

I had one I sold a few years back. Had some pretty decent traffic but very hard to monetize IMO. I added things like "premium listings" for $5 listing but didnt do much, maybe a few hundred bucks.

It was a pet project I worked on with a colleague and we had a few ideas, but he found someone to buy it out and drove it right into the ground. It was to difficult to deal with spammers and AFF links all over the place

Are you mirroring other posts currently? It'll help in the beginning.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet but adult dating and escort traffic go hand&hand.

Just throwing it out there if you want to keep me in mind later on down the road.

Davy 12-10-2010 02:51 AM

I don't think any of the options above will make you more than beer money. :2 cents:

Premium for 5$? I am thinking of regular for 10 times that (50$/year) and premium wor way more. 5$ is a joke.
I mean escort listed on my site already gets on average at least 3 customers per month, thats like 450$/month and 5000$+/year. So 50$ would be 1 cent on a dollar. 5$ is just a joke imho... :Oh crap

Due 12-10-2010 05:35 PM

screw the $ and tell the escorts you need to manually review and rate them :pimp

exactly right, you need to get very established first before trying to monetize properly, you need to build traffic and "market share" first for a long time and then phase in something like this

If you have any directories with high PR and good Alexa rankings hit me up for trades.
