In 2004, sleep medicine experts have successfully treated a rare case of a woman having sex with strangers while sleepwalking.

At night while asleep, the middle-aged sleepwalker from Australia left her house and had sexual intercourse with strangers. The behavior continued for several months and the woman had no memory of her nocturnal activities. Circumstantial evidence, such as condoms found scattered around the house, alerted the couple to the problem. On one occasion, her partner awoke to find her missing, went searching for her and found her engaged in the sex act.

Incredulity is the leading player in cases like this. But a combination of factors convinced the doctors that the case was a real sleepwalking phenomenon, including the distress of the couple, and an in-depth clinical evaluation. She stopped her night-time excursions after psychiatric counselling. Drugs such as benzodiazepines, which are sometimes used to treat sleep walkers, were not necessary.

I would wonder why she claimed sleepwalking just to have sex when she easily could have gotten up and walked over to the other side of the bed to visit her husband rather than get dressed - get in car - go to club or where ever - find guy(s) - bring them home - go to bed afterwards and not even notice that something was strange? Seriously

If she were my wife, as I'm a light sleeper I'd have woken up the first night she tried it, would hear her opening the door and leaving the house, and would have gone out and either followed her or brought her back.

On night 2 she'd be in 4 point restraints.

There is a show on the discovery channel about someone (maybe this woman) doing this. It all seemed really legit and they were really afraid. They had strange guys showing up at their house and didn't know why, she was getting online and picking up guys only to be shocked to see the chat history/browser history the next day and so on. This is something that is very much in dispute and as far as I know, there is little to no evidence to support that this person is actually sleep walking being that sleepwalkers can't typically function to the degree required to make all this happen. There are similar stories about binge eaters etc doing it in their sleep.

To me, calling it "sleep walking" seems to be a way to thoroughly dissociate ones self from these behaviors. After all, people aren't waking up and paving driveways or something completely random. They are engaging in compulsive behaviors that wouldn't be tolerated or be acceptable otherwise.
