Al-Qaida on brink of using nuclear bomb

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Qai...104/story.html

Al-Qaida is on the verge of producing radioactive weapons after sourcing nuclear material and recruiting rogue scientists to build "dirty" bombs, according to leaked diplomatic documents.

A leading atomic regulator has privately warned that the world stands on the brink of a "nuclear 9/11".

Security briefings suggest that jihadi groups are also close to producing "workable and efficient" biological and chemical weapons that could kill thousands if unleashed in attacks on the West.

Thousands of classified American cables obtained by the WikiLeaks website and passed to The Daily Telegraph detail the international struggle to stop the spread of weapons-grade nuclear, chemical and biological material around the globe.

At a Nato meeting in January 2009, security chiefs briefed member states that al-Qaida was plotting a program of "dirty radioactive IEDs", makeshift nuclear roadside bombs that could be used against British troops in Afghanistan.

As well as causing a large explosion, a "dirty bomb" attack would contaminate the area for many years.

The briefings also state that al-Qaida documents found in Afghanistan in 2007 revealed that "greater advances" had been made in bioterrorism than was previously realized. An Indian national security adviser told American security personnel in June 2008 that terrorists had made a "manifest attempt to get fissile material" and "have the technical competence to manufacture an explosive device beyond a mere dirty bomb".

Alerts about the smuggling of nuclear material, sent to Washington from foreign U.S. embassies, document how criminal and terrorist gangs were trafficking large amounts of highly radioactive material across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The alerts explain how customs guards at remote border crossings used radiation alarms to identify and seize cargoes of uranium and plutonium.

Freight trains were found to be carrying weapons-grade nuclear material across the Kazakhstan-Russia border, highly enriched uranium was transported across Uganda by bus, and a "small time hustler" in Lisbon offered to sell radioactive plates stolen from Chernobyl.

In one incident in September 2009, two employees at the Rossing Uranium Mine in Namibia smuggled almost half a ton of uranium concentrate powder - yellowcake - out of the compound in plastic bags.

"Acute safety and security concerns" were even raised in 2008 about the uranium and plutonium laboratory of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the nuclear safety watchdog.

Tomihiro Taniguchi, the deputy director general of the IAEA, has privately warned America that the world faces the threat of a "nuclear 9/11" if stores of uranium and plutonium were not secured against terrorists.

But diplomats visiting the IAEA's Austrian headquarters in April 2008 said that there was "no way to provide perimeter security" to its own laboratory because it has windows that leave it vulnerable to break-ins.

Senior British defence officials have raised "deep concerns" that a rogue scientist in the Pakistani nuclear program "could gradually smuggle enough material out to make a weapon", according to a document detailing official talks in London in February 2009.

Agricultural stores of deadly biological pathogens in Pakistan are also vulnerable to "extremists" who could use supplies of anthrax, foot and mouth disease and avian flu to develop lethal biological weapons.

Anthrax and other biological agents including smallpox, and avian flu could be sprayed from a shop-bought aerosol can in a crowded area, leaked security briefings warn.

The security of the world's only two declared smallpox stores in Atlanta, America, and Novosibirsk, Russia, has repeatedly been called into doubt by "a growing chorus of voices" at meetings of the World Health Assembly documented in the leaked cables.

The alarming disclosures come after Barack Obama, the U.S. president, last year declared nuclear terrorism "the single biggest threat" to international security with the potential to cause "extraordinary loss of life".

LOL fearmongering ehh? You obviously watch way to much conspiracy crap about the U.S. government. This is for discussion that's all. MOST people never read news and people should. Who is afraid? If your afraid then your a fucking idiot. This is for people who think terrorism is over in any type. Funny thing is your the type of person that would ignore crap like this and get bombed while drinking your morning coffee. Blame the news/TV which are the fearmongers not people for giving a shit. I had read tons of things through the years and never seen anything about nuclear with these fucks. So I posted it.

soulfuricstudios 02-01-2011 10:31 PM

It's bound to happen. Why live in fear of something you can't avoid if you try. Not saying you are afraid, but no one should be. Is the threat real, absolutely, has the terrorism spotlight faded immensely, damn straight, but can we stop it as citizens? Probably not.

Kiopa_Matt 02-01-2011 10:40 PM

Bullshit. This is a group who's most brilliant idea is to shove explosives in their underwear upon boarding a plane. They're not planning a nuclear strike anytime soon.

I have a difficult time believe anything serious when it comes to the so called terrorists.

Lets face it, the best they did, and even that is open to debate, is hijack some planes and fly them into buildings. In terms of explosives, they suck ass.

What they do have is a bunch of idiots who are willing to die for a cause, so that is really the only thing that makes them somewhat scary. Even then, they blow themselves up in a market in their own country, killing 30 people. Big deal. Until that starts happening on the streets of New York, I don't have much faith in them to do much of anything.

I have to agree here. They are pretty fucking stupid for the most part. I am not saying it is entirely impossible, but you have to admit - the US has done a pretty good job at curbing this bullshit.

Exactly how many attacks have succeeded versus how many were thwarted since 9/11/2001? :glugglug

In one morning, in a highly coordinated effort, they sent the twin towers to the ground, damaged the pentagon and almost took out the White House. Imagine if they had made it so the first plane to hit was the one going for the White House and they succeeded in taking out the President.

All that happened that morning succeeded in bringing America's aviation to a grinding halt. It caused the US to change the way it flies from now on and all those security checks and delays every flier endures is a direct result from the events of 9/11

In one morning they brought America to it's knees, deeply impacted our lives, changed the way we live and continue to do so. They certainly can't be taken lightly and continue to be one of the biggest threats.

No doubt. That was one morning, 10 years ago, and it changed the USA forever.

What have they accomplished since? Failed shoe bombs and underwear bombs?

After 9/11, if somehow these nuts are able to detonate a nuke inside of the USA, then I have nothing else to say other than it is the fault of the USA for allowing them to slip it in. They still don't check air craft cargo after all this shit.

I'm also a firm believer that if the USA was not murdering 100s of 1000s of innocent people in other countries, that the USA would not have to worry about terrorist attacks. You reap what you sow.

But regardless of any of that, they have already won. Look at the insane state of security everyone lives in now thanks to them. All the USA can do at this point is just keep murdering civilians and creating new terrorists who may someday actually succeed in killing a president or worse.

They really don't have to be smart enough to create a dirty bomb all they need to do is find someone that can and it seems everyone has their price. They keep recruiting and someday they might get what they're looking for :Oh crap

i'm not going to do your research for you, but you've somehow managed to miss some very large and successful terrorist attacks over the last 10 years.

and no, there is no valid debate over who was behind 9/11.

On US soil? Please show me because the only ones I know of besides 9/11 and the first attack on WTC were home grown.

There have been plenty of attacks in other countries. But I'm talking about on US soil.

Yes, there is debate on who was behind 9/11. It may not be what I personally believe, but lots of people question the official story. Just because the government said it was one way, doesn't always mean they are telling you the truth.

Depends on how you look at it.

Look at the world pre 9/11 and then look at it today. Look at the insane amount of security in place now on a global scale. Look at the airports. Look at new laws passed to allow eavesdropping and searching property without warrants. Look at laws they are still trying to pass because of it all. Do they really need an internet kill switch? And it's only going to get worse.

Before 9/11 did you see soldiers with machine guns and attack dogs walking through the airport? I didn't.

When I see this, I can only think the terrorists have already succeeded.

I don't know what their original plans were, but they've done a hell of a job disrupting how Americans (and some other places around the world) live.

We have terrorist attacks almost daily here in the south of the country, all from Muslim extremists. Road side bombs, shootings, blowing up schools and banks... but life goes on and it's so common now it hardly makes the news. It's a way of life here, as it's a way of life in many other areas of the world. Eventually it will become a way of life in the USA. Just a matter of time.

Rochard 02-02-2011 11:27 AM

Bring it.

The moment a nuclear device goes off, it changes everything - and changes the rules drastically. The gloves would come off. After 9/11 we invaded Afghanistan and took out their entire government. What do you think we would do if ten thousand Americans got killed in a single attack? One hundred thousand?

You know... We have low yield nukes too, just small enough to take out a small city.

They haven't won at all. What "insane state of security everyone lives in"? Having to show my ID at the airport? I still wake up, drive my car where I want to go, no check points, nothing. Nothing at all has really changed for the average American.

We don't live in fear, the increased security rarely affects us, and for the most part sadly we've already forgotten what happened on 9/11. But business still goes on as usual, and we still have tens of thousands of flights daily. Nothing changed at all really.

sologirlcontent 02-02-2011 02:12 PM

this would be scary if Al-Qaida were real

SZNY 02-02-2011 03:28 PM

Don't that we don't get to see/hear everything what is happening in this world. Also the media is used to mislead the people.

We only get to see/hear what the governments wants us to know/believe.

The Al-Qaida group is heavily funded and run by Saudis who also have a lot of assets and resources in the US/rest of the world and for sure they can buy knowledge to produce these dirty bombs.

I don't know about that. If entire countries still can't build one, I'm not sure al qaida will be able to. Plus, if some rogue scientist was selling a working model, a country like Iran could pay a much higher price for it.

But the attacks of 9/11 aren't really an apt analogy here. The 9/11 attacks were similar to what happened in Arizona, pretty much anybody can do it if they are motivated enough, it doesn't require any technical knowledge or highly specialized and costly equipment.

usually your posts make sense but you lost me on this one.

it seems evident and irrevocable that sooner or later there will be an enormous crash of power between the muslim and the western worlds.
the muslims keeps pushing their terror on the western world and the western world keeps killing muslims in their home countries. sure both sides have legit reasons (by their own standards) for their actions.
there is no good win/win scenario.

How does that explain the various terrorist attacks and attempts in other Western countries that don't have the "track record" the United States does for "killing innocent people?" Sure, some of the other countries have been involved in war and get involved here and there, but nothing like we do. England, Spain, France, Northern Africa... Northern Africa has an active al Qaeda element and while we may have "loose allies" in Northern Africa, it's hardly enough to warrant that sort of activity when al Qaeda could be much more active in countries we have strong alliances with.

I don't really buy into the "al Qaeda only hates America" rhetoric anymore. They have proven time and again that it isn't just the United States they want to spar with.

The bomb builder could be motivated by greed or become part of the cause.

The 9/11 attack took a lot of planning and I believe they had to learn how to fly the commercial jets to the point they could hit their targets.
That takes a fair amount of technical knowledge. It's foolish to underestimate their abilities and the lengths to which they will go to carry out acts of terrorism.

Everyone needs to stop and think: if all these people are attacking us because they hate Israel so much, how come Israel never gets attacked? Like NEVER, and they are surrounded by their enemies. Seems a little fishy to me! Seems like Israel is the one doing the attacking just to keep young men and women signing up for the US army to do Israeli dirty work.

I know it sounds so conspiracy nut of me but that can't just be coincidence that Israel is the safest place while everywhere around it somehow can't help but be hit by terrorist attacks.

Obviously I don't want a nuke, dirty or otherwise, going off in the US.

My point is after 9/11 we invaded an entire country, removed it's government, and then occupied it. What do you think will happen if a nuke goes off in the US? We'll be dropping nukes on any potential terrorist target without concern for the civilian damage - meaning civilian deaths. It's either nuke them or wait to be nuked.
