How many keywords should I target per project?

3 hard and 4-6 soft is the way to roll.

the bigger the site, more keywords of course

I will say maximum 4 main keywords and 5-6 light keywords.. because one can do best on-site seo with 4 keywords perfectly to my experience.. as i do it from past 11 years.. :) Best of luck..

one or two main keyphrases with good search amounts..then another two or three that are significantly easier to rank for.

3, and some longtails, all depending on the age of your site etc etc

you just need 3, google likes it 2 in the pink and 1 in the stink
