Sneaky ass collection companies

Just got a call from some company on my cell. I use it mainly for business, so I normally answer it "Hello this is John" if I don't know the caller.

This guy goes "John?" and I answer yes, to which he replies "I am calling from [Credit Card Company], you have an account past due with us and I want to get your account back to good standing." Uhh, WTF, no I dont have an account with you.

He continue to tells me I do, only based on my first name but can not discuss more unless I verify who I am... bullshit scum bag you called me. He asks for my address, phone number (which he called), date of birth and... social security number. Didnt give him any, told him to verify he has the right person.

Immediately got angry with me and said there is a $4,000 balance that is overdue and this is the last chance I have to rectify the situation or I will be sued for thousands more. :1orglaugh:1orglaugh surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre buddy.

He told me the account is mine and they have all my info, but need my social security number to discuss it with me. He tells me sometimes an account is opened but may not remember, or even it could be opened by a spouse or someone with my information. He tries to reason with me to give him my soc but NOT HAPPENING.

Can't believe these companies just fish for people to call and assign debts to. This happened years and years ago to me with a medical bill, ironically the guy had the same name (I have a very common name) and they were calling everyone in the phone book.

I wonder how many people fall for this and get fucked because of thse scumbags

Wow, I had no idea. What a rip. Good for you for sticking to your guns!

I can't believe you didn't just hang up.

I get calls where the person immediately demands "Tom?" or something along those lines, to which I reply "Who's calling please?" or "Maybe not".

I almost never confirm they even have the right person until I know who the HELL is calling me. It's usually telemarketing or someone asking for donations.

I also get some collection agency calling for someone I've never heard of. They even leave messages on my machine when I'm not around telling me that by continuing to listen, I'm confirming that I'm this person! LOL. Pretty soon I'll need to give my answering machine a name tag if it continues to "listen".

A few years ago someone put my number down as theirs for a rental at one of those shady rent to own companies and when they stopped paying I got weekly calls for at least a year. Personally, I had a lot of fun with it.

It's like a prank call in reverse and they won't hang up on you.

It really brought out the mischievous tween in me.

Last week I chewed out an Indian telemarketer and told him to put me on their do not call list. They did finally stop calling. Man they were driving me nuts.

Get his number if he calls again, it is so easy to sue these guys now

When I first got my land line number, I was receiving about 2 to 3 calls a day from a collection agency looking for someone who used to have that number. They told me the only way they would remove my number is I had to send them my statement showing the phone number, day of connection and my name... NOPE!

Instead, I went to Costco and bought these Panasonic phones that have a feature to block numbers. I have the same on my cell phone from AT&T.

1st time I tell them politely to stop calling me.
2nd time I tell them politely to stop calling me and I refer to the first telephone call.
3rd time I tell them politely to stop calling me and immediately hang up.
4rth time I put my phone close to my pc speakers... high volume... and play some music.
