Mother, 22, dies after keeping pregnancy secret because she feared partner's sex conviction would see baby taken away

A young mother died after keeping her pregnancy secret because she feared her baby would be taken away from her.

Donna Hunt, 22, thought her newborn son could be removed by social workers because her partner, Gavin Harris, is a convicted sex offender.

Her first child was already in care for that reason.

The inquest into Miss Hunt's death today heard she was heavily pregnant when she was struck by pneumonia and initially refused to seek medical help.

Miss Hunt was finally admitted to hospital when she began struggling for breath but it ultimately proved too late for doctors to save the mother, from Llanbradach in Caerphilly, South Wales.

Surgeons managed to save her baby boy but Miss Hunt was declared brain dead after the Caesarean operation.

Her family took the agonising decision to turn off her life support machine the day after the baby was born.

Miss Hunt's father said: 'She was a quiet girl who never did anything to upset anyone.

'She was always smiling and we never heard her say a bad word. I don't think she ever swore once.

'She lived more for other people than for herself - she was such a generous person.'

The inquest heard Miss Hunt's first child was taken into care because Harris is a convicted sex offender.

Miss Hunt discovered she was pregnant again last July and her GP told her to make an appointment with a midwife.

But she ignored his advice and later 'repeatedly lied' to social workers who suspected she was pregnant.

In October Miss Hunt complained to her partner that she was struggling to breathe and was having shivers.

She felt so ill she even cancelled two visits to see her child in care - something she had never done before.

On October 24 she was seen by her GP Dr Ihekwoaba Chimezie who diagnosed a muscular injury and prescribed paracetamol.

But the inquest heard that in the early hours of October 24 her partner was woken by her distressed breathing.

Coroner Mary Hassell said: 'He called for an ambulance and she was admitted to hospital for emergency treatment.

'Doctors tried to stabilise her because she was not getting enough oxygen to her brain.

'They performed a Caesarean operation to improve the chances of Donna and her unborn baby.'

The inquest in Cardiff recorded a narrative verdict that Donna died of meningitis and pneumonia.

Miss Hassell said she would be writing to the Royal College of General Practitioners after the tragic death.

She said: 'In Donna's case it seems her concealment meant she didn't access medical services she might otherwise have used.

'She was in fear that people should not know about her pregnancy and so was less likely to go to the doctor when she was feeling unwell.

'If she hadn't been concealing she might have gone earlier - or more than once.

'It's an issue I've met in this court before.'

The inquest heard Miss Hunt's fit and healthy baby boy has been taken into foster care.
