Google COMPLETELY IGNORES meta keywords

Google and most other search engines haven't paid any attention to meta keywords in years, yet people still use them religiously? Is it just like a good luck thing, trying to get a few hits from people who aren't searching on google, or just don't know?

icymelon 05-13-2011 12:32 AM

it cant hurt to use it. just not worth making a long list.

cooldude7 05-13-2011 12:33 AM

i guess yahoo or some other small se uses it., so its plus to use them.

yahoo doesn't use them either, they mostly just steal google's index nowadays. i guess there might be a few small se that still use it, but i don't get but a handful from them per day. askjeeves.com? lol

yeah, i guess throwing in a few main ones can't hurt, but i see some pretty extensive lists occasionally, obviously took a lot of time.

I usually just throw in a some main target keywords there, takes what ? 10 seconds. Doesn't matter.

meta keywords are so 90's

redwhiteandblue 05-13-2011 04:17 AM

What if Google doesn't use it for ranking a site, but does look at it to see if you've spammed it chock full of keywords? Better off leaving it out IMO.

rowan 05-13-2011 04:32 AM

Tip: if someone on facebook links to your page, it will include the meta description in the news feed.

Martin 05-13-2011 04:50 AM

So how does it work these days?

But then again, if that guy ever decided not to like my site then...... :(

I don't want to get "Panda Slapped".

I just now that's going to happen to me one day.
I've seen things get kind of testy in the dairy section.

fatfoo 05-13-2011 07:55 AM

It's bad if Google ignores meta keywords. People have paid me $100s to write high quality meta descriptions.

RyuLion 05-13-2011 08:07 AM

They've always used my description tag. :)

probably very high quality

Horny Dude 05-13-2011 08:24 AM

I just add four or five targeted ones in there. I still see people filling them with 30+ words, most have nothing to do with the page they're on.

Bladewire 05-13-2011 08:38 AM

The Matt Cutts announcements are modeled to send out very specific messages, to a specific group of people.

Matt Cutts wrote Google's SafeSearch family filter, you know, the one that filters out sites as being safe, or not safe, for kids. He has a PHD, a Masters in Science degree and two B.S. degrees, one in math the other in computer science.

You are being told, what they hope you will believe, so you will follow with action/inaction accordingly. What Google says, then does, are often in conflict.

Take them off and see how your site does on google. I have done tests with them off and on, always better with on. No matter what google says.

Robbie 05-13-2011 08:52 AM

I would suggest that all of you take out all meta tags from your websites.

Then please inform me what keywords you were trying to rank for so I can make sure to go for them WITH metat ags in place and let's see what happens. :)
