HOW TO create and keep a minimalist and clean workspace
Making this in a new thread branching from the post of my new office workspace.
A messy, cluttered and disorganized workspace can have detrimental affects on your productivity and state-of-mind. Someone asked this in the other thread: Quote:
If you already have a bunch of unorganized clutter. get rid of small amounts at a time, in between breaks. Don't need to clear it all off at once. If something isn't important (junk mail, etc) - throw it away! You don't need it. And it's taking up your valuable time. Additionally, go all digital. Tell your electric company, phone company, etc to all stop sending you paper bills. This is an age where it's just not necessary. You can get it emailed. Be careful though, email boxes can get cluttered too... Check out Zen habits, this guy has some great stuff. Also read his book "Focus" - http://zenhabits.net/archives/ |
I'm a fucking neat freak.
My car is a good example. I always keep my cars clean, inside and out. Inside in the glove compartment is my registration and paperwork. Otherwise, there is nothing else in the car. The trunk is empty. When I come home, I make sure anything I brought in comes out with me. My wife looses her fucking sun glasses every other day. I have a draw in the kitchen that is "my draw". I keep my glasses, wallet, car keys, and Itouch in there. I walk in, the first thing I do is open up this draw, put my sun glasses in, car keys, etc. I know exactly where they are right now. My desk... I'm gonna take a picture of my desk in a moment. I have my cell phone, a coke, and a pen that I used to sign something. Other wise, nothing else. |
Only touch paperwork once. Act on it, file it, or toss it.

Here's my office.... The screen on the left is a DVD player - Today I'm watching Charlie Wilson's War.
Screen on my right is my HP touch screen, which I only really use for email. http://www.rochardsbunnyranch.com/rock/officenu.jpg |

Only the essentials is probably best. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, notebook & pen etc.

My office is my house. And I mean everywhere in my house.
I have a room that is the "office". but can never find myself staying in there for more than 30 min. curse you iPad. |

I have a very cluttered desk but that is because it's full of artwork, gemstones and other strange objects.

My work-space is filled with all sorts of things, doesn't bother me as I'm focusing on the 27" monitor in front of me.

My shit is cluttered as all fuck. But I just reach here or there and I have a screw driver, a file, a pen, scissors, soldering iron (never know when this baby will come in handy!), water bill (in case I need to prove who I am), remote control heli, pipe, lighter, ruler, blank CDs/DVDs, paper clips, voltmeter, spare tail rotor for the heli, shoe laces, lighter fluid refills, xacto knife, many hats, ipod plugin for the car, gum, aspirin, imodium AD, the list goes on...
All of it within arms length and all cataloged in my head. |
I'm also a total neat freak. My desk consists of my iMac, my iPod Touch, my scanner/printer, a note pad, a nice little glass vase to hold my pencils/pens and my bulletin board. That's it. It serves me quite nicely and I'm never looking for anything.

My desk looks like a tip but I know where everything is.
Worst thing anybody can ever do for you is offer to tidy up - you'll never find anything ever again :( |
