So... police threatened to shoot my dog.
 

Last night I was outside working on a retainer wall in front of my house. I live on a hill in a private area surrounded by woods. Not easy to get up here. Police do not patrol up here, and frankly I hardly ever see anyone else around the house. There is an access road out back that is so washed out that noone ever drives it, a few folks hike or walk their dogs or whatever, hardly ever though...

So, I am outside leveling the dirt as we filled in the wall and the dogs are just hanging around getting in the way. I see an officer heading towards us on the path up the hill. Odd... I didn't call them, I am not doing anything wrong, and neighbors are not very near, so no reason for them to call. So the cop approaches my property slowly with his hand on his gun, I am like wtf... not even realising my dogs are wandering around. So he says "Better get your dog!" at which point my dog hears him and lunges towards him, now leaving my gate, barking a little. He is a good dog. But I didn't even bother calling the dog cause if he would have shot my dog, I would be in jail for shooting the cop with his own fucking gun.

I responded to the cops second call out "Better get your dog! I'm gonna shoot him", with "Shoot my dog and see what happens". The cop nearly shit himself whenn the dog heard him and took off towards him, but the cop startled him. Had he just came up to us in a normal matter, the dog would not have sensed his fear and his aggressive stance/weapon.

Turns out, they recieved a 911 hang up call from my house... umm, we were all outside working. Noone here called 911.

This situation could have ended very badly for the dog, the cop, myself and my family... all over a fucking 911 hangup call that noone made. :Oh crap

what a dumb ass... I can even understand them coming by to make sure things are ok within the household when they get a call like that but they are still not supposed to be aggressive about it without reason to...

No... and I am sorry for not mentioning the breed. He is a Great Dane/Black Lab mix. He has the shape of the dane but isn't very large, maybe a little bigger than the average lab.

He is so gentle, like I said he would not have done anything had the cop not startled him and been in an aggressive stance with his hands on his weapon when the dog noticed the officer.

Maybe where you are from, I don't know where you are from, but in my neck of the woods, shooting dogs is about all the cops are capable of. They are just a bunch of fat lazy pussies here. Just sayin'.

Touchy situation. On the one hand you have the cop who HAS to respond to a 911 hangup call. Every time one occurs they have to check it out, thus he has no idea what he's walking into. He sees a sizeable dog, doesn't know what the deal is or if the dog is aggressive or what.

Yet on the other side of it you have a guy who is out working in his yard, unaware of any 911 call, and sees this random idiot cop setting foot on his property with his hand on his gun making threats about killing his dog.

Conclusion: Cop was obviously a cat guy.

If it happened quickly as described, I don't think it would have anything to do with balls, but more about protecting a family member, instinct. I love my dog, she's not "like" a member of the family, she is family. I know that she would risk her life to protect me, and I would do the same for her.

Firstly, you wouldn't have taken anyone's gun and shot them with it, that much is for sure. Especially once the gun has already been drawn. Saying otherwise just makes you sound ignorant.

Secondly you can be right and have a dead dog, or you can control your dog. If you really love your dog, the right answer is obvious.

I have a chocolate lab who is the sweetest dog. When he walks up to small children, I have to zero fear that he will ever do anything wrong.

When he sees fear or aggression, a switch flips and he can seem pretty scary.

No one could fault your dog for acting the way he did.

Leash laws or not, I am up in the fucking woods, the dog was in my gate until the cop announced his retardedness and alerted the dog. I am not going to tie my dogs up when there is nobody around ever... ever. well occasionally, but hardly ever. It is not like i live in town where people walk by the house regularly or cops patrol the area.

Don't get it twisted... the cop looked pissed at what i said, but he didn't shoot, and he seemed generally understanding. I think he knew my position as a dog owner.

dogs have an uncanny ability to detect/hate police and postal workers..

Some dogs don't care but many dogs go apeshit around cops.. I had a doberman who would let babies yank on it's ears , but if it caught sight of a cop or a mailman 3 blocks away it would turn into carl lewis ( ben johnson if you're canadian )

In central europe they shoot dogs too, if they stand in their way ... You love your dog too much.
