How many episodes of The Wire do I have to watch before it gets good?

I've seen this be called "the greatest show of all time" enough to be convinced to give it another chance.

http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/co...t_that/c2h7w9x this thread on reddit is what sold me + all the stuff I've seen on GFY.

I've watched the first 2-3 episodes a longggg time ago and got bored... so how long do I have to hang in there?

I think I'm going to give Breaking Bad a chance as well. Any other recommendations are welcome. :)

yeah it sucks. 100% pure hype. don't bother with the rest. just gets worse.

crockett 09-03-2011 01:21 PM

If you don't like it, then don't watch it. Seems simple enough.

I did stop watching, but if I'm missing out on one of the most entertaining shows of all time and it just means I need to stick in there, I'm willing to give it another go! :thumbsup

It depends on what you like, but everyone that I have recommended this show too has loved it.

At the point you finished, you are still learning the characters and figuring out what exactly is going on. Give it maybe 6 episodes. If you still don't have any interest, maybe then move on, but you need to learn the characters more.

Jayvis 09-03-2011 01:38 PM

Thanks Sly, thats what I figured. What other shows do you watch?

scouser 09-03-2011 01:39 PM

ive never really got it either. watched whole of the first series, no where near greatest tv show ever.

Socks 09-03-2011 01:48 PM

I'll tell you when you change your sig. Holy fucking annoying batman.

Chosen 09-03-2011 01:59 PM

Haven't watched a single episode...

If you ain't into kickin rock get off my block.

CaptainHowdy 09-03-2011 02:06 PM

You'll have to believe that before watching a single episode ...

st0ned 09-03-2011 02:32 PM

I have yet to get into The Wire myself. Out of all the series I took a look at, only 2 of them held my interest enough to watch the entire series:

Prison Break
Weeds

Prison Break was by far my favorite, I couldn't stop watching episode after episode. Weeds had the obvious interest to me. :winkwink:

But yeah, if you haven't watched Prison Break I suggest checking it out.

Paul&John 09-03-2011 02:39 PM

Wire is pretty good and complicated - too many characters etc.. but its good if you get into it!

2st0ned: weeds is fucking awesome, still one of the best shows out there, but prison break... the first season was great but the following ones not so really.

Is it just me or is the current season of weeds pretty damn weak?

on the other hand, all the seasons of The Wire were pretty good :thumbsup

Is it really that bad? You don't like looking at my ugly mug? :helpme

You're probably right maybe I'll change it... thanks!

And thanks Stoned I will check that out!

kane 09-03-2011 03:29 PM

Like others said it takes about 5-6 episodes before you really get a grip on what is happening. If it has been a few years I would also go back and watch the first few again. Just understand that the first few are laying the foundation for the whole series so they are a little slow.

fris 09-03-2011 03:35 PM

i watched all 60 episodes in a few weeks ;)

geirlur 09-03-2011 03:49 PM

I watched the first episode and was bored.. maybe I should give it another try after reading this thread :)

I think just if you reply a bunch in a row.. 4 of those flashing at once doesn't make for nice reading in between..

YANOMSAYN? ;)

My Pimp 09-03-2011 04:28 PM

It has a great rating on imdb. But they do not show it in central europe.

donkevlar 09-03-2011 04:42 PM

The Wire will take you about 5-6 episodes to get into. But it's the best series EVER and that's just fact.

Weeds is fucking terrible. Prison Break had one good season and then became one of the worst things ever.

Breaking Bad is fucking awesome.

Again, these are facts, not opinions.

did you watch the made for tv movie that finished off the series? I was rather disappointed with how it turned out.

anexsia 09-03-2011 05:12 PM

and for people that like The Wire, check out the mini-series "The Corner" which is by the same director and same stuff.

It wasn't nearly as good.

agentspits 09-03-2011 05:55 PM

The Wire is definitely top 5 greatest shows of all time at the very least. I can see how it might not interest certain people, but it should be able to appeal to most.

Prison Break is top 5 for me as well, I hold that show in high regards, cause it's one of the first that I followed heavily.

Breaking Bad is greatness.

Sons of Anarchy is another really good show, can't wait for the new season to start!

Dexter is another classic.

Shap 09-03-2011 06:31 PM

Took me about 5 episodes then it rocks

L-Pink 09-03-2011 06:46 PM

You didn't like the book I recommended either. I think the problem is you lol.

MattP 09-04-2011 01:03 PM

After first 5 episodes, I couldnt stop watching. Took me couple of weeks and lots of sleepless nights to watch all seasons.

After I finished watching, I got post-wire depression :) (I found that term when googling "shows like wire" :) ). However, there is no shows like The Wire, so realistic, complex, so.. real life. No strictly good/bad characters, no happy endings or shitty romances, no super happy families. Only people trying to do their jobs, with all their weaknesses - alcohol, drugs, sex, racism...

No gun action or funny budy-budy talk.

You either love the show or not.

buildingfutures 09-04-2011 02:33 PM

Imo you have to watch 5-6 episodes to really get into it good and start caring for all the characters. Every season after takes about 1-2 eps, it's all setting up.

The show is great.
