What's the point of countering $2,000 with $2,500? You deserve to have never heard again from him.

If you're willing to settle for 2k and afraid you won't ever get a counter offer, than approach him again that you are now willing to accept his offer.

I sold a domain name to a pretty well known web guy (well known not by name, but his sites are known by all) for $5k through Sedo. He never transferred funds and the deal fell through.

He put in another offer for $5k - 4 months later. I countered with $10k as more of a GFY than a serious counter-offer.

He accepted.

Never hurts to try I guess.

I spent 2k on a domain once.

Well that's a reasonable counter even if you were telling them GFY - it was still twice the price. Countering 25% higher is just asking for it to fall through - just take it vs. nickel-and-diming them.

Congratulations on getting a nice offer to buy a domain! It never hurts to brush up on your negotiating skills.

If you answer too quickly, and counter with a small increase in price ( as you did ), then a seller could see you as desperate, inexperienced, pliable and willing to go lower then their asking price. A clue that you might be interpreted this way is long lulls between replies to communications spanning many days or weeks and exponentially talking down the value of your domain.

By educating myself and negotiating wisely I turned a few hundred dollar offer into a $20,000 sale over a 2 month period. Good luck with this and don't lose hope, but most of all don't let the negotiating process take its toll or you'll end up selling for less then your domain is worth. :thumbsup

I once bought a domain...

seanchai 09-15-2011 08:57 AM

I bought some Trebor mints once but I took them back as I'd actually wanted a Kit Kat.
True story and just as interesting.

iamtam 09-15-2011 09:15 AM

let me guess. offer came from a gmail account. the email had your domain in upper case letters, or in quotes.

they are playing the sucker game, trying to see if email accounts work.
