Missile Silo Homes
Lame as it may sound, I am into architecture and 'weird homes'
Missile Silo Homes have been getting my attention lately. Saw a show about them, some guy picked one up for 40 grand, and it housed an Atlas F 80 foot missile from 61-65. Now its a kick ass underground house. They added all kinds of killer additions to it of course, and created a huge ground level windowed greenhouse type loft up top that rules. I dig these houses, but you cant see them from the ground. Its like Resident Evil the movie. Killer, they go for quite a lot once you fix them up. The government invested millions into them in the time of war, but they are abandoned now. Just another fixer upper. I want one. http://www.adirondackrealestate.com/silo/atlasf.htm http://www.adirondackrealestate.com/silo/Silo.htm http://www.missilebases.com/ http://www.silohome.com/ <img src=http://www.adirondackrealestate.com/silo/SiloRndr.jpg border="1"> |
I've looked into those myself... unfortunately, most are in very very remote areas - IE, accessable only by dirt roads and airstrips, and as you say they can get quite expensive once cleaned up. From what I gather a large part of that is pumping out the thousands of gallons of water that collect in them once they're abandoned, as well as repairing flood damage. It's not easy to get building supplies and the like up to where these locations are.

Ya I saw those, they are seriously cool..
The other one I found linked from there at some point was the airplane homes.. You know, the ones where they take an old 767 or something and turn it into a house? Then they mount it on a big pole on a hill top and let the plane turn in the wind like a weathervane.. Crazy. Cheers, Backov |

Jesus, hook up some video surveilance and I would be in heaven. So bad ass. I am a montana militia man survivalist at heart.
|
oh yeah
|
The one I saw on TV had tons of video surveillance. Outdoor, and indoor. Even cams shooting down the stairwells etc... the guy lived there was a freak too. Like me. Like you. ;)
It was a show about weird places to live. Another guy turned an old Colorado Schoolhouse into a living learning bot that patterns behaviors and starts to think about what you 'may' do when you come into a room. For instance, the house learned after the guy turned on the television, that he would always turn off the recess lighting along the walls behind the tv to kill the glare, well now whenever he turns on the tv the house dims the lgiths for him. Awesome shit, the temparture and everything are controlled by the house. Not just a 'smart house' where you pre select light patterns etc, this house 'learns' - I cant find links, but that house was coveredtoo during the same show. |
those things are definitely cool. appears there's a bunch of them in my area, i should go check them out. actually, i knew there were some, but i didn't know THAT many. damn.
too bad they didn't make more of the titan I's... that would be a cool pad.... 45,000 sq ft? hell yeah. |
I like those round underground tunnels. Install a people mover strip like in an airport and it would be the coolest thing ever.
Set up office in the control room. That would be so awesome. A wall of monitors. We could even play wargames wheee |
DAMN those things are cool! I'd get one if they had any near civilization!
I really really like the runway in the front yard. That's what I need to land my new plane when I get a new plane. BUY MY CONTENT. |
Just a question, don't you guys like sunlight? Cool idea indeed, but I couldn't live underground.
|
Very cool indeed.....
I went to visit the Titan Missile Museum outside of Tucson, AZ. It was a great way to spend the day if your into such stuff. If you are into odd houses....... In Vegas there is this underground house that was built in the late '60s....... And there is another one in Fresno, CA, where this guy just keep digging and digging...... Strange people. I'm sure they would fit right in on this board. |
I would LOVE one of these! I dated a guy who wanted to build an underground house, but he wanted to do it on the sly - not an easy thing to pull off unless you do the whole thing yourself :(
I forwarded him the links - thanks! |
i love that shit. i want one.
supposedly people were also looking into building them out into possible offsite secure storage areas... would be a good way to make the "home" pay for itself, and you wouldn't have far to walk to work :) |
Fletch, this will give you a tickle...I saw a story about one of these homes about a year ago...it seems these two guys bought it and were brewing up LSD in the thing for a few years...but not just a little. Like 10,000,000 hits at a time. When the man came to bust em, one of them was running across the field the silo was buried in with a 5 gallon bucket or ergotimine tartrate in each hand, trying to get away with enough to restart. If you put lsd, silo, and nebraska into google, you'll probably find the story.
