fun little before and after... only one day is "before" you can see my bandwidth usage was cut by 2/3rds and no quality was lost :) same amount of traffic too.

sigh. no. the code was modified to optimize all user submitted images. the post was just a friendly reminder at how much it can save people.

maybe you'd prefer people posting lyrics or other items that have absolutely nothing to do with the internet, adult webmastering, etc... but little tidbits like this can prove useful to some. the fact that i posted a graphic to show proof makes it more interesting than just saying "u guyz should optimize ur images lol i saved lotz $$$ on my last billz!!!" - here i have proof.

That stats image you posted is 23016 bytes! It's only like 6 colors! Don't you know that image optimization for images like these are best done in .gif format?

before size was stock from user uploads. some images could have been anywhere up to 600-800k. nowadays the largest images are probably in the 60k range. another change was starting to use thumbnails where appropriate (earlier versions just scaled down the image using html... out of laziness) so now everything's done properly.

if i was buying bandwidth by the meg, i could have saved a few hundred a month easily.
