GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot found dead on tour bus
 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The lead guitarist for the heavy metal band GWAR has been found dead on their tour bus.

Manager Jack Flanagan and record label Metal Blade say Cory Smoot was found early Thursday before crossing into Canada following a show in Minneapolis.

It's unclear what caused Smoot's death or how old he was.

Smoot performed since 2002 under the name "Flattus Maximus" with the Richmond, Va.-based band known for its comically grotesque costumes, stage antics and vulgar lyrics.

Flanagan says there's no word yet on funeral arrangements or the rest of the tour.

Lead singer Dave Brockie, also known as "Oderus Urungus," says the band is just dealing the loss and called Smoot "one of the most talented guitar players in metal today."

GWAR frontman "Dave Brockie" explains:

"As we work our way through these difficult days the question is ? what will GWAR do? After a lot of consideration, we have decided to carry on with the tour. Although the great temptation would be to return home, curl into a fetal position, and mourn, we can't do that. First off, Cory wouldn't want that. He would want us to go on and would be pissed if we didn't. Plus we know the fans don't want us to quit. They are going to want a chance to come to grips with their loss, and there is no better place to do that than at a GWAR show. Though it's hard to believe, I think we all would feel a lot worse if we stopped. For better or worse, we have to see this through. That doesn't mean that Cory will make his final journey without us. When the arrangements have been finalized, Cory's best friend and GWAR's music tech Dave 'Gibby' Gibson and myself will return home to attend the services and pay the proper respects to our comrade."

27 years together this year...amazing for such a shitty band. As for 7th grade, you must miss the sarcasm and satire in their lyrics. Oh well, your loss.

GWAR is way underrated.

I'm sure the dive bar circuit is really gonna miss them, well unless they hire a new guitarist. then billy bobs house of ribs will be rocking once again.

I'm not familiar with a lot of those venues, but most sound a little bigger than "dive bars." I know the Electric Factory in Philly isn't a dive bar. And Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany are pretty far to travel for some gigs in dive bars. :2 cents:

And they will have a new guitarist. They already announced they are continuing the tour, as Cory would have wanted it that way.

I understand why you're so butthurt about all this. I felt the same way about gwar.


But then I turned 14 and moved on.
