If this wall collapses we are going to have a river running through our town center

After we had floods last night this wall which holds back the river Parrett here in Bridgwater is collapsing and they say will flood the town center if it does collapse. This is a tidal river with some pretty strong currents, high tide is later on tonight so time will tell if it holds up or not.

Heres a few pics I took of it this afternoon

There is another big crack running down the wall where you see the grass growing on the wall from the top

CyberHustler 11-05-2011 01:23 PM

Who needs a town center anyway? They're over-rated.

CyberHustler 11-05-2011 01:29 PM

P.S. Be careful

We should be fine where we are and there are police around so if we have to get out they will tell us, but thanks for the well wishes

On the other side of the wall parts of the road have gone so I imagine that water is already washing the earth away underneath other parts of the road too

Are they planning on repairing it? You would almost think they could dump some cement in there for a temporary fix.. .

When I went up there earlier this afternoon they were digging up the road further up near one of the bridges, but where the wall is collapsing and the road has gone they wernt doing anything. I guess they think it is to unsafe to get to close to it or something. I know the electric and gas people were there so unless they are trying to make that safe first I really dont know.

Wow, looks like its already really close to colapsing! Hopefully it doesn't and your town is ok!!

Maybe trying to identify the gas and electric lines so they can shut off that section for repairs. Something needs to be done that is for sure.

The fact that the grass is so tall and the cracks do not look at all new, it might be time for the city to change leadership. Any 12 year old could have seen this coming.

baddog 11-05-2011 02:12 PM

Is that Hadrian's Wall? That does not look like a wall I would want to rely on for anything.

Its very old I know the town itself dates back to 800 A.D. The wall is also part of its heritage but not sure of its actual age though.

Maybe from the 1800s

"With so much trade, the town needed improved infrastructure for the transport of goods and so in 1840 and 1841 the town’s dock was opened with the completion of the canal link to Taunton and the Bristol to Exeter Railway arrived in the town"

Bridgwater is 30-40 miles SW of Bristol in the SW of England. Hadrian's Wall runs across England in the North from Wallsend to Solway Firth.

It was a joke, a comment on how old it looked. I was pretty sure Hadrian's wall was not a levee.
