In order for governments to take more and more power from the people, and keep it long term, rights and liberties must be taken away gradually. No big sudden crackdown, except during "emergencies". You will just get used to small new things and not feel the next small step, and the next, and the next, and the next. By the time you are 90 and you look around and realize what is really going on, it will be too late, and the younger people, who will have grown up with this stuff, will just call you a crazy old man, and say that everything is fine.

My statement was about the fact that people get upset when too much power is grabbed too quickly, but not when it happens slowly.

I don't think that it's any kind of conspiracy. I don't think it's some long term plan by some kind of cabal.

I think that it's in the nature of people that serve high up in governments, i.e. people that seek power, to want to expand those powers. Once the government takes over power and responsibility for a sector of our lives, it never gives it up. The nature of government and the people who work in it is to grow, and continue to grow. Again, this is not a conspiracy, either long-term or short term, it is simply the nature of the people that are drawn to govern. It's rather like the folks that run large corporations. After a certain point, they are more interested in growing their power rather than growing their wealth. The type of person that runs a global corporation tends to be the kind of person that wants it to get bigger and bigger. Similarly the kind of person that gets into high levels of government tends to be the kind of person that wants the same thing. The only difference is that the government can use violence to enforce it's edicts, whereas the corporation cannot.

Once the Republicans finally got control of both houses, (for the first time since WWII), in 1992, they only waited 3 years or so before they started growing government just as much as the Democrats.

I don't count myself as a Republican.
