McDonald?s No Longer Uses Slime

McDonald's announced last week that, as of last August, has stopped using ammonium hydroxide in the production of its hamburgers.

I'd be excited if they have new procedures for making sure cancerous beef tumors don't make it to the grinder. While it is easy to spot the large tumors, it's the smaller metastasized colonies that pose the bigger threat. Heating won't kill them if the compounds causing the DNA fracture remain in a particular form.

No, the article says "the International Business Times lists some other questionable chemicals showing up in our foods:" under which is shellac that is said to be used to give candies their sheen. While you can get a soft-serve sundae with M&Ms, I think if the M&Ms are coated in shellac, McDonalds really is not to blame.

Good advice.

**For those of you who eat out on a very regular basis (I know a few people here that eat out ALL THE TIME), you're essentially ingesting way more dirt, spit, snot, and other unmentionable human matter than those of us who almost exclusively make our own meals at home.

ammonium hydroxide = ammonia + water

maybe they should add some bleach to the burger as well... >.<

for those that don't want to cook at home (like me) stop by the grocery store deli instead of these fast food places. the food is a lot better and you get a lot more for your money.

Well, you may be a bit mislead here.

You say it's furniture polish, saying that's some bad thing which is unhealthy for you.
You then say it's shellac.

Ever considered that forniture polish may be nothing more than natural products?
It doesnt have to be a bad chemical. You could wax your floor with earwax for example. Works perfectly, though a bit disgusting.

So...my point it: shellac is simply a natural product, harvested from some bugs. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not chemical, it's not bad.

So they can put shellac in my food, I don't care, it's in A LOT of products.

D Ghost 02-01-2012 04:58 PM

Whats more disturbing is that they would considered and did sell this to other human beings.

The food industry uses ammonium hydroxide as an anti-microbial agent in meats, which allows McDonald's to use otherwise "inedible meat."
On his show, Oliver said of the meat treatment: "Basically we're taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest form for dogs and making it 'fit' for humans."

http://www.hulu.com/watch/231711/jam...-a-big-mistake

Watch the above video, it was in the beef...

So, what moved McDonald's to make the change in their hamburger production? In a statement posted on its website, McDonald's senior director of quality systems Todd Bacon wrote:
"At the beginning of 2011, we made a decision to discontinue the use of ammonia-treated beef in our hamburgers. This product has been out of our supply chain since August of last year. This decision was a result of our efforts to align our global standards for how we source beef around the world."

I'm not sure about being worse than fast food from a factual standpoint but imo it tastes better. It is an alternative to fast food for those that don't cook at home. My homemade meals might include a can of tuna straight from the can, or making a bowl of ramen.

I eat once a day and $5.99 philly lasts me two meals. Sometimes I'll just have a $2.99 green salad for the day. Even the salad is probably full of nasty stuff like pesticides.

I believe out government actually tries to kill us. It's less social security they have to pay out when you're age 60. They actually tried to make having a garden and growing our own food illegal.

fancy a Big Mac now

Matt 26z 02-01-2012 05:40 PM

McDonalds was good up until sometime after the year 2000. Portions have gotten smaller and generally more disgusting each year since then.

Whenever I eat there, the "McDonalds stench" radiates from my skin for the rest of the day. Even if I take a shower I can still smell it coming off of me.

They put Methylcellulose in their shakes, not harmful but it makes you shit a lot ?

The slimy, gooey appearance of an appropriate preparation of methyl cellulose with water, in addition to its nontoxic, nonallergenic, and edible properties, makes it popular for use in special effects for motion pictures and television wherever vile slimes must be simulated. In the film Ghostbusters, for example, the gooey substance the supernatural entities used to ?slime? the Ghostbusters was mostly a thick water solution of methyl cellulose. The Aliens ooze and drip a great deal of methyl cellulose?especially the queen.

Methyl cellulose has been used to safely simulate molten materials, as well. In several of the Terminator films, it was back-lit with colored gels and films to reproduce the heated glow of iron in the large pouring ladles used to transport the metal from the smelting ovens to the various molds and forms. Methyl cellulose was also a stand-in for the lava flows on the volcanic surface of Mustafar, in Star Wars Episode III :Revenge of the Sith.

I eat better these days. If you work at home and crave something better for you but still satisfying, try my recipe:

- A large spinach Tortilla or similar flat bread
- Lettuce
- Spinach Leaves
- Half a tomato, chopped
- Red Peppers and Green peppers
- Some chopped red onion
- Mayo, or even better, Hummus
- Basil seasoning, pepper maybe, a little salt.
- Optional chopped grilled chicken. Preferably grilled on the Bar-B.

Wrap it all up and consume. DELICIOUS, and the fat texture feels just as satisfying as a burger. Plus if you're a pig like me you can wolf down a second one and feel nice and FAT but without the guilt normally associated with eating McCrap.

BIGTYMER 02-01-2012 10:58 PM

you guys realize that not everyone has 2 hours a night to cook food every day right? It's sad seeing all of you trying to blame one place for all peoples health problems.. completely sad. Yeah, it's not the fish and chips that we wolf down a couple times a month, its not the pizza that is killing us. Can't be the ribs from those weekend bbq's. No way it's the large amounts of cola we are sucking down, the over drinking and drug use.. it's clearly the mcdonalds that is doing the damage.. they should really stop killing us all!

personally i work for a living so i cook when i can.... and I assure you i'm better at it than you ;)

if you have the right stuff at home actual preparation time should never be more than 20 minutes. typically once something is in the oven, you don't have to watch it as much. i prefer to cook for myself every night. its not just mcdonalds or even just fast food places. most premade foods are bad in general for you. even cooking at home you have to watch what you are using as ingredients, sodium, sugar contents, preservatives, artificial flavors, etc.

you are right, mcdonalds doesn't use shellac. thats used for candies such as m&m's. the site just lists various chemicals from various foods, not just mcdonalds.

I think it was on Food Inc where they explained the addition of the Ammonium Hydroxide, they need it to kill any bacterium that may enter the plant, and get into the ground meat, when the cows are brought in from the stockyard, where they stand in manure sometimes up to their knees.

Its a cheap solution, to a problem that could be fixed, by not overcrowding the stock yards, and having the cows out on pasture, where the manure would dry up.. and fall off within a few days.

That's why I buy beef from the farmer a few lines over from me

Phoenix 02-03-2012 09:17 AM

i was driving home last night and was hungry, i pulled into a Mcdonalds, then this thread came into my mind. I went home had a large glass of water and went to bed instead.
