E-cigarette explodes in man's mouth, knocks out teeth, part of tongue
A Florida man is reported to be recovering from injuries received after an electronic cigarette exploded in his mouth.
Tom Holloway, 57, of Niceville, FL, is recovering at a local burn center, following the explosion of the e-cigarette. Holloway was smoking the device on Monday night when it exploded, knocking out his teeth, burning his mouth and taking out part of his tongue. One of Holloway?s neighbors spoke with ABC News affiliate WCTI, and said that the explosion sounded like a firecracker had exploded in the house. Chief Butch Parker of the North Bay Fire District described the accident in a similar fashion, saying that the explosion appeared as if Holloway had been holding a ?bottle rocket in his mouth,? ABC News reported. Parker also said that the most likely cause of the explosion was a faulty battery inside the e-cigarette. At this time, the brand of e-cigarette has not been identified, but Parker said that the battery appeared to be a rechargeable lithium battery, based on the presence of a recharging station in the study, where the explosion happened. Holloway had stopped smoking real cigarettes two years ago, and had used the e-cigarette as part of his stop-smoking regimen. In addition to knocking out his teeth and part of his tongue, Parker indicated that the explosion set fire to the study. Electronic cigarettes are popular with many users, as they simulate the actual act of smoking, giving users the physical sensation of smoking, as well as taste and appearance. But, the devices are not currently regulated by the FDA, although the FDA did announce intent to regulate the devices as a ?tobacco product? in April 2011. This lack of regulation has resulted in a lack of data regarding the safety or effectiveness of the e-cigarettes on the market today. Those who favor FDA regulation say that distributors of e-cigarettes often make claims that are not only misleading, but are frequently aimed at the younger population. Some fear that using these e-cigarettes will actually increase the lure of real cigarettes for young people in the long run, i.e. they could become a ?gateway? to smoking for youth. http://www.huliq.com/10473/e-cigaret...th-part-tongue |
Don't sue!

Maybe he'll stop wasting his money and do something productive instead of trying to be gay sucking on tubes
|
Well, he would be smoking any more!
|
Poor guy had a bad battery it seems. Remember those exploding laptops.. bad batteries.
People shouldnt turn to these gimics to "help stop smoking" anyway. Just be honest, it's to keep smoking and get the drug you're addicted to. If I can quit by actually quitting, so can anybody. |
wow that is horrible.
I could not bring my self to sell this kinda crap before I heard about this. Dam |
scaring story, may be it is just make up story?

What other 'gimmick' has an 85% success rate with people quitting cigarettes? |
It's probably tobacco industry propaganda...

"Holloway had stopped smoking real cigarettes two years ago, and had used the e-cigarette as part of his stop-smoking regimen."
the whole smoking to quit smoking thing is such a scam! lol as someone who quit smoking cold turkey, if after two years you still smoking, YOU HAVENT QUIT ANYTHING. lol shit or get off the pot. |
I saw this story on CNN last week and am calling bullshit. He probably tried to light it...or had some kind of home made modification.
Something just doesn't add up. Even if he had a bad battery that exploded (very unlikely), it wouldn't be enough to set his place on fire. |
I play around with electronics a lot and have seen many lithium ions explode and are easy to too if you overcharge them. I wouldn't want one in an e-cig. Which is why I sell hookahs :winkwink:

I'm surprised you don't know more about the products you sell. Batteries themselves do not explode but when you have a lithium ion go into meltdown mode they produce a lot of gas in a very short time. If the batteries are enclosed with nowhere to vent you have a full fledged pipe bomb. There have been other reports of this happening with ecigs and it seems metal tube mods with stacking batteries have the most problems, but it can happen with an 808 or 501 ecig just as well. |

Not to mention nicotine itself is no more harmful than caffeine and actually has some health benefits. |
I use one, and while i agree nicotine is not good for me, i tried a lot of things and nothing worked. yes, i realize it is all in my mind, and if people think it makes people weak to have trouble quitting smoking, i understand that point of view... but to argue that smoking e-cigs are no different than smoking actual cigarettes is not true. Yes, i get the bad effects of nicotine in my body, but at least i am not sucking in the smoke. They work, and they have already made a HUGE difference in how i feel.
not smoking > e-cigs > real cigs |
