Plex doesn't compile and play rar files anymore. For this reason alone, Plex sucks.

XBMC is still the king.

I softmodded mine a looooong time ago with so many old school emulators/games. Still works, too. :winkwink:

I've always used mediabrowser but was thinking of trying xbmc on my next htpc. Any one ever compare the two?

I don't pirate content, so don't need that functionality. Plex has a lovely UI and that's all I care about really.

I've tried a bunch of different media center clients over the years (and I mean years, dating back to the original XBMC on the original XBOX), and nothing has come even close to the flexibility and overall awesomeness of XBMC.

For starters, the fact that I can just point XBMC at my SMB share (NAS box) and it automatically creates a library of my media, including artwork and descriptions, puts it ahead of most solutions out there. Add to that the open community of developers = lots of handy plug-ins = flexibility, XBMC remains the cat's ass in my view.

After the original Xbox install I was running it on a Gen 1 Apple TV softmodded for a while. Now I'm running it on a Mac Mini.
