Your favorite Steely Dan song?
Let's be honest, these guy were musical geniuses. They could go from subtle and simple to complex compositions with difficult time-signature changes. Simply awesome musicians.
What are your favorite 'Dan' tunes? For me: Any Major Dude, Throw back the little ones, Peg (I know it was one of the more popular ones, but I can't remain seated when this song comes on)....and the rest of their catalog. |
:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

Only the stuff with guitar work by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter should be allowed to qualify, imho, :2 cents:.
|
I was actually thinking about them last night while watching "Later With Jools Holland." Squeeze is my favourite pop band - Steely Dan is a very close second.
Some of the best guitar work ever: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter! Damn it, flashback time... gotta go drink... "You wouldn't know a diamond if you held it in your hand... the things you think are precious I don't understand." |
So much great music produced by Steely Dan...I don't have a favorite, per se. :thumbsup
I really liked the rocking first album when it came out, with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In The Years"... I also enjoyed as Steely Dan developed their musical stylings to the more slick and polished jazzy sound which they are probably best known for nowadays: :stoned ADG |
Drop dead brilliant musicianship. That's all gone now...
|
Dammit, AGDWG! You just posted the same video but with The Cos. Cheap shot!
Regardless, a GREAT band. I'm sorry you guys are young and missed all this shit. And The Midnight Special - and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert... Weird, bands used to actually play live back in the day. |
Lmao! Steely Dan? Are you fucking serious? To each their own I suppose
|
Hey Nineteen for sure, although Peg is good too.

I like Reelin in the years and Hey Nineten

Damn, Donald Fagan should be glad he's a musical genius. He wouldn't have gotten a bit of puss without that.
That said, Rikki. |
I had a lot of sex with Steely Dan in the background .......
|
Another that really flashes me back to specific time.
Another lesser know gem. Pretty hard to find a bad Steely Dan song. |
hey man, good thread :thumbsup Agreed. SD are the BEST!
i thought our lil wild time had just begun but you kind of scared yourself, you turned and run As someone who was there in 1974 and smoking lots of hooch (so I am a true judge :) ) THIS is my fav all time Steely Dan tune. It has it all.. very nice on the head.. very trippy how it takes you around and thru the song. probably #2 your everlasting summer and you can see it fading fast so you grab a piece of something that you think is gonna last def one of my top 5 bands of all time :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup Support for all classic rock music threads always :) oop just seen garce and I agree :) as always :thumbsup |
the beginning of this is just fantastic and gives a certain feeling as does most of their music..
drive west on Sunset to the sea you get to go past baddog's place (and maybe yours Tofu) in your mind :) |

in the late 70s when i use to sneek into this local adult book store, there was this one hot chick in a pictorial named Josie..
ADG, seen we're on the same vibe :thumbsup Nice I'll have to check out that Live version from 1995.. very interesting. The PBS concert in 2000 was excellent. Two Against Nature. Best album of 2000 imo. love this (but not avail) [Almost Gothic] wonder if YT will let me UL it? Doubt it. |
shit, why fuck around :)
[Two Against Nature (2000) Not Avail] did anyone notice my thread on full albums crashes.. too much for YT I think. Done through about The Beatles. Currently debating whether I want all of Pink Floyd hehe :thumbsup can anyone load this fully and remain stable? https://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=1067157 nice beginning collection of classic rock and some pop hate.. player.. game.. :) in fact this one now crashes lol Sorry :) hmmm something about dem dare full albums.. |
This kritakospa dude is out of control. Held up in a bunker in Timbuk Tu flooding YT with classic rock albums. 90% from him. Claims he has been warned twice.
Get em while they are hot. I don't think BMG or MCA or RCA is cool with this :) Always a lone gunman somewhere :) |
I hear them and I think of NYC.
|
Never heard of them before...
|
[QUOTE=Vjo;18960719]have we met and are you female lol j/k
Oh, crap, I'm a dude. Well, I guess if a door closes, another one opens somewhere. :) What are the odds we both chose Rikki :) We could (maybe) make beautiful music together. Then again prob not :winkwink: |
Love the Dan.
FACT: growing up I had a dog named GAUCHO after the album, since my father played it so often. |

this one is a real fav THIS IS REALLY COOL Guy plays drums to Doctor Wu awesome professional fidelity the change in cadence (I guess you call it, I am no musician :) ) in the middle is really sweet, kind of like Rikki in the middle actually Doctor Wu is #1 for me. Rikki #2. Doctor Wu is so sweet a song espec at the beginning and during the middle chg of cadence. you walked in and my life began again is one of the greatest lyrics and musical moments and this part: and the wind down before.. dont seem right i been strung out here all night i been waiting for the taste you said you'd bring to me is really sweet |
BTW, it is Doctor Wu not Katy Lied. I checked the box set I bought in about 1995. Yeah they made money off me for sure :)
So altho the vid is awesome and the drumming is fantastic he apparently did not buy the album hehe. But that is a cool vid :thumbsup Great bass drum and drumming back beat. Amazingly good professional drumming. are you crazy are you high or just an ordinary guy I love watching that drumming. That is so fucken cool. Perfectly synced audio too. |
Love Steely Dan... I grew up listening to them on the old family cabinet stereo.
Here's one of my faves.... Dirty Work. |
Love em! Love pretty much all of their songs! I was a recording engineer in the 1980's in LA, met a lot of very famous musicians, but the only time I was ever star-struck was when Skunk Baxter came into the studio.... Fricken' AMAZING.
. |
Do It Again and Reelin' In The Years my favorites :)

Actually Lauren Wood did that too. Not sure who was the original. I always thought Lauren but prob Mr. Fagen :) Have to look... yep: Dirty Work, Composer: Becker Fagen, Can't Buy a Thrill "Because it was original lead singer David Palmer's showcase, "Dirty Work" was retired from Steely Dan's repertoire after Palmer left the band in 1973" Ill be damned if I didnt find it this is a great very rare album Lauren sounds a lil like David Palmer or him like her actually :) |
Lauren can sing. This she wrote.
good to see her get some limelight Please Don't Leave (not avail) is her best song from the first album with Dirty Work. Bet I could UL that one :) Really nice song. Was in some movie (Pretty Woman) you prob seen :) |

Steely Dan was before my time, but I'm an appreciator of great music. I still get headaches trying to wrap my head around some of their concepts and styles. Genius. Pure, unadulterated GENIUS. |
They don't tour often, however Steely Dan live is a magical treat, which I highly recommend:
Steely Dan induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (a good watch with band bio info): Not bad for a band named after a dildo from a William S. Burroughs novel... :pimp :stoned ADG |

My brother is still in, based in NYC, and is doing very well. He's been on the cover of Mix Magazine, has a grammy, etc... http://www.discogs.com/artist/Brian+Sperber . |
This thread needs a spotify playlist...
|
I was an account rep/promo guy with MCA Records when "GOLD" was released, and record stores went through that album like crazy.
Fantastic band... |
This thread brings back some memories. :-)
