The Shawshank Redemption - best movie ever voted by IMDB users

IMDB is the largest user generated movie ranking site in the world,so you should believe them.

MacDonalds sell more burgers than anyone else in the world. Does than mean they are the best?

Popular /= best.

Great movie yes. The best ever would be citizen kane to me. He did things in that movie never done before.

Choopa_Pardo 08-01-2012 07:05 AM

Great movie? Unquestionably. Best movie of all time? Not even close.

brassmonkey 08-01-2012 07:06 AM

ajrocks 08-01-2012 07:07 AM

so did howard hughes movies, that doesn't make them the best ever either.

this one is important but has become a dull automatic when it comes to 'best of all time picks' more like critics trying to sound noble.

kristin 08-01-2012 07:57 AM

I love Shawshank Redemption.

However that list is pretty bad. The Truman Show over Good Fellas, which didn't even make the list.

Blow is one of my all time favorite movies, also not on the list.

Best-In-BC 08-01-2012 08:03 AM

Great Movie

Luscious Media 08-01-2012 08:06 AM

"The role of Andy Dufresne was originally offered to Tom Hanks, who couldn't accept due to scheduling conflicts with Forrest Gump. Hanks did, however, work on Frank Darabont's next film, The Green Mile."

props to SK

Imdb votes, and so its top list, lost of value (and so of my consideration) a few years ago. Reason: the majority of imdb voters it is teenagers who seen a grand total of 250 movies in their short life, none of which outside the imdb top 250 list. There is no way they see or vote any movie released before of year 2005 unless already in the imdb (or similar) top lists.
As an example, I would not consider the votes of anyone who does not seen the holy mountain http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071615/ , it got votes from 10,260 users and 102 reviews, and it is released in 1973.
Compare with the dark knight rises released weeks ago already 209,000 votes and 1598 reviews (and ridiculous vote 9.0 - evidence those people seen no any movies before of that).
In general the imdb user reviews are more useful than the vote, but just for not-popular movies.
An example is in the anime - the tv movie episode Lupin III Rupan Sansei: Episode 0 , http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0827737/ of 2002, it got only 115 votes and 2 user reviews, but the vote is 8.6 and reviews are good. In fact, this is one of the best Lupin III movies ever, but no way you discover it from imdb top lists.

michael.kickass 08-01-2012 08:18 AM

It's in my top 10 rank too, but I wouldn't agree with most of the movies in IMDB's top 10. .It's a fact that people are stupid so...

Blow was awesome, but not as awesome as Boogie Nights :winkwink:

SpotOnTechSupport 08-01-2012 09:52 AM

It was great watching it filmed as well. They filmed it at the old Ohio State Reformatory here in Mansfield. The beam that had the "BROOKS WAS HERE AND SO WAS RED" was stolen during filming of Air Force One. Most of the scenes were filmed at the Westinghouse Building (now tore down), downtown Mansfield, E&B Market (closed) on W. 4th St. and up off of St. Rt. 545 in Richland Co.

CaptainHowdy 08-01-2012 10:03 AM

Weak stuff ...

selena 08-01-2012 12:39 PM

Just watched this the other night for the zillionth time. I will never, ever get tired of the scene of him standing in the pouring rain, his arms raised in triumph.

scarlettcontent 08-01-2012 12:45 PM

great movie, seen it a few times and will watch again :thumbsup

Young 08-01-2012 01:20 PM

I watched just over 86% of the IMDB 250. Just about everything that is post 1940.

Agreed. Absolutely spectacular movie though, and quite possibly largely due to the fact that it followed true to the book almost word for word.

Shawshank was Oscar-worthy, and definitely deserving of all the nominations it received, and more.

candyflip 08-01-2012 03:08 PM

The Critic's All Time List just came out and Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" is on top.

acctman 08-01-2012 04:01 PM

The Shaw is the best, come on every time you pass it on tv or online yo just have to watch it. I just hope they don't ruin it by trying to do a remake

I actually am a movie nut, I went and saw kane in a movie theater which is very different experience from watching it on tv. I would give it number one.

Wrong analogy.

Would be correct if:

He would claim some movie is best because it earned the most money in cinema, or sold most copies etc etc.

or

You would find that people on biggest food ratings site voted mcd food as number 1

voted as number one =/ most popular in number of sales

campimp 08-01-2012 07:08 PM

awesome movie for sure

exactly right

Great movie. If you don't think it's the best or rated correctly sign up for an imdb.com account and rate accordingly. Rate whatever movies you want how you want.

I like the trivia that the script called for a big irish dude to be his friend named Red.

SkinBoysCash 08-02-2012 11:06 AM

The 90's had a wide range of Masterpieces that went unnoticed at the time and got their cult statuses only years after.

Movies that come to mind:

- Shawshank Redemption
- Usual Suspects
- Reservoir Dogs
- Boyz N' the Hood
- Glengarry Glenn Ross
- Heat
- American History X

- Many More I can't think of right now................

Scott McD 08-02-2012 12:40 PM

I must be one of the very few people who haven't actually seen it. Will check it out soon...

Mutt 08-02-2012 12:46 PM

there is no such thing as 'the best movie of all time', 'the best song of all time', 'the most beautiful woman of all time' etc - foolish to rank anything as 'best' that is totally subjective. saying 'it's the favorite movie of IMDB voters', that's fair.

the arts aren't a competition, sports are.

Man, you are wrong. Also, at Rottentomatoes.com 98% of users liked this movie (almost 800.000 votes). Teenagers like actors such as Tom Cruise, Johny Depp, Vin Diesel, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Alba but certainly not Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman.
