France ATM bandits use forks to nab millions!!

http://rt.com/news/theft-atm-france-fork-993/

WTF!!!

JR_GraphicDesign 08-18-2012 02:42 AM

?After making one transaction with their bank cards they insert a small fork with the teeth bent back into the cash distributor,? police said to Le Parisien. ?Then the thieves attempt a much bigger second withdrawal, which they cancel before the transaction is finish. By then the cash is prepared in the distributor, which they pull out with the help of the fork.?

BIGTYMER 08-18-2012 02:46 AM

BIGTYMER 08-18-2012 03:48 AM

Here comes an increase in forks found stuck in ATMs. :)

Wouldn't the ATM have a record of the account that canceled the transaction thus revealing the thief's identity? Well I guess if there was more than one canceled transaction during the day they could not prove which stole the money if they only kept track of the ATM's balance on a daily basis.

Ya most of them have cameras on them as well. So your identity would be exposed unless you put a mask on or something...

helterskelter808 08-18-2012 02:10 PM

Presumably they wouldn't be opening accounts with their real identity.

I suppose not, but even if they used fake identities, you'd think the accounts the cards are attached to would still have to have a balance equal to or greater than the amount they try to pull out on the second transaction or you'd think the ATM would not even begin processing it and send the money towards the place it comes out of. I suppose they could then do a third transaction to actually take the remainder of the balance off the pre paid card.

Wow thats wild

True, but the maximum single transaction on an ATM usually isn't that high anyway, so they wouldn't need much in. Which makes me wonder how many times they had to do it, if they really did steal "millions".

I have absolutely no idea how ATMs work though; from the sounds they make I thought it only put the money in the ATM 'distributor' after it was possible to cancel. But maybe that's the sound of it filling the distributor back up. Maybe the distributor, which they gained access to, has a huge pile of cash, thousands, regardless of the transaction amount.

So it sounds like they may obtain a pre paid card using fake identity info loaded with the max the ATM will allow you to withdraw in a day. Put it in ATM and make a withdrawal of a small amount. Then start a second withdrawal of the balance, cancel it before it completes, use the fork to get the queued up money. Then complete a final third withdrawal to get the balance still on the card.

Actually they could repeat the second step over and over which would enable them to get more than the amount one is allowed to withdraw in a single day.

Ever seen a picture the police post from an ATM camera? Looks like those Loch Ness pics or of Big Foot. Absolutely worthless. We get better pictures from Mars.
