Anyone had issues with HTML5 video (specifically mp4) playing only audio in Chrome?

I use Video.js for videos on some mainstream sites and for some reason, Chrome is now not playing them properly - only playing the audio while the video remains black. It's not the code on my site either - even the video on videojs.com is doing the same. Works fine in FF and IE9 but not Chrome.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so, how can it be fixed? Am hoping I don't have to deal with uninstalling/reinstalling Chrome but even if that does fix it, I'd like to understand why it would stop working when it used to work fine. Any thoughts?

Mines playing fine on chrome. I do notice the player is not showing a poster. Just a blak screen. When I click play tho it does play fine. My vids are rendered mp4 and ogg

Sometimes you have to close Chrome and restart it to get it to play nice.

For me, the player shows a poster but then goes black when I click play. And I've restarted Chrome and restarted computer and still the same. :/

So uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome did jack shit. This doesn't seem to be a Chrome issue or else there'd be a shitload more people screaming about it given Video.js popularity, so it must be something else. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and as mentioned, the videos work fine on IE and FF. Mp4's play fine on computer too (WMV). What could be the issue?

sojproductions 09-29-2012 11:46 PM

it could be an encoding issue with your video converter, i had heaps of problems using built in quick encoding settings, if you're not already use base settings, don't use any 'mp4 for hd web' quick settings etc.

no errors in console in chrome?

It's not that - the video on videojs.com isn't working. Plus, my videos had been working for me on Chrome until just recently. I have no idea what would have changed on comp but it'd either be that or newer version of Chrome screwing with things, and given I'm not seeing massive support tickets on their support about Video.js not working on Chrome, it would seem to be an issue with my comp.

When I try videojs.com, I get no errors, only a warning: "Resource interpreted as Image but transferred with MIME type text/javascript: "http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js". " So nope, no error.

Chrome = Google. Neither of them actually work anymore. Try Opera. Or even IE.

Thansk for the help!

Post a link of one of your vid. We can try it to see if it plays for us.
It might still be in the coding. You might not be seeing alot of emails due to not alot of people use chrome, or if it didnt work they automatically tried another browser and got it to play. I remember when something changed on FF and my video stopped working, I didnt get alot of emails. It wasnt till one of the fhb sites that actually notified me that my videos weren't working that I found out.

Ok, well http://www.videojs.com, the home page of the popular script that I'm using a WP plugin version of, is having this problem for me on Chrome. Otherwise you can try one of the ones I've been trying to play, http://doma.in/blog/what-to-do-with-your-domains/. Both do the same for me - just play audio and video is just black.

This didnt load for me either on chrome. works fine on ie and safari

helterskelter808 09-30-2012 03:55 PM

FWIW, videojs.com just has the loading wheel for me (Chromium). Works on Firefox.

Haven't read any of these but it seems there are/have been Chrome issues:

Just to reiterate, they HAD been working for me on Chrome about a month ago, so it would have had to be a Chrome change within the past month.

Maybe chrome changed something so now they dont work. This happened to me on firefox. My mp4 was working fine then next thing you know they stopped working. Wasnt till I recoded the vids to ogv that they started working again. You might just need a fall back extension like the way I use flash for i.e. and ogv for FF

Stop sticking your weiner in the sound jack.

My vid on Doma.in has mp4, ogv and webm. Are browser supports good enough these days for ogv and/or webm that I should put one of those first? When I took mp4 out completely Chrome did work on it. It just seems bizarre they'd go backwards on supporting major codecs of major formats.

PornMD 09-30-2012 06:24 PM

Welll...just checked on other computer I don't use much and the video works on Chrome (exact same Chrome version). So definitely seems to be a machine issue. :/ Have no idea how to figure out how to fix it.

ggrrssyydik 09-30-2012 06:48 PM

Just for the record. I was using windows7 pro. latest chrome. It could be os related or cache setting, or the computers media player.
Now as for extension mp4 is primary with ogv and flash using mp4 as fall back up. I haven't used webm.

My Chromium was just updated a day or two ago. No idea if it would have made any difference though.

Is there any issue with having ogv as primary and mp4 as a fallback instead? if I switch them, theoretically that should solve the issue I'm having as Chrome was playing the other format fine.

The first time I had issues was night before last, and I THINK it was BEFORE my Chrome updated to 22 but am not 100% sure. Then again, with my other computer working fine with the same Chrome build, it doesn't seem to be specifically Chrome-related.

ggrrssyydik 09-30-2012 10:03 PM

Maybe the media player on both computers are diff and thats enough to cause you your headache, As far as ogv as primary, havnt really tried that. If anything I think you might have an issue with playing on ipad and iphone. As far as I remember I had issues on ipad when I had flash as primary. It would not play unles you reload the page for some reason.

Where do I find out what media player is playing it in my Chrome install? Given IE and FF work fine it has to be specifically whatever's playing it in Chrome.
