Parrots in the middle of London!

There are a load of green parrots eating the pears in my garden.

I tried getting pics but I only have the camera on my phone and they are too far away.

It turns out they are common here.

And yes, before anyone asks I have taken my meds this morning....

Mr Pheer 10-14-2012 12:52 AM

I have a grey parrot in my living room. He constantly asks me if I want a taco.

halfpint 10-14-2012 12:54 AM

yep they are now listed as one of our breeding birds here in the UK They have been around for some time now and their number are increasing

AllAboutCams 10-14-2012 01:07 AM

I have seen them when out bike riding but never near my home

I was in the park in east London 3 days ago and saw a pair of green parrots I thought I was seeing things...

When did this happen...

halfpint 10-14-2012 01:29 AM

They are called ringed necked parakeets

According to DEFRA:

"There is a long history of occurrence in GB, with a first record of breeding in Norfolk in 1855. However, the present naturalised population dates only from 1969.

They are also considered a pest and they were going to cull them

When I was up in Norwich I did see the Great cranes up there, but no parakeets

The RSPB and the Wildfowl Trust have also just re-indroduced the Great Cranes down here in Somerset

I am in East London as well - From what I have read they started in West London and are spreading east.

This is from 2004 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/3869815.stm

Used to be loads in Richmond Park.

You've got them in Barcelona as well, city used to be full of them, they were thinking of culling them though.

There where loads of Budgies in Punta Prima (near Alcante) - Flocks with hundreds of them used to flock around the town centre at night.

We have them in NYC too. I still remember my first day seeing them, thought I was special until google told me they were common.

We have them in Amsterdam as well. Saw one just a few days ago. I wonder how they survive the winters. They must be tropical birds right?

There are a lot of various kinds of exotic birds flying around Los Angeles too... presumably most are escaped pets. I once saw a flock of assorted parrots, parakeets, etc., near the Convention Center. The climate here is more benign than in Western Europe, and I'm surprised parrots can survive the winters there.

Intrigued, I googled "Escaped parrots in Los Angeles" and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_parrots.

rogueteens 10-15-2012 10:14 AM
