Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to 4 years in jail by a Milan court over the Mediaset TV rights case, according to Reuters.

The case revolved around a plan to purchase the rights to broadcast U.S. movies on Berlusconi's private television networks.

Offshore companies were used to avoid paying taxes on the films. The price of the films was then inflated as they were sold internally. The difference pocketed by the defendants amounted to 250 million euros.

Berlusconi has also been banned from politics for 5 years. The case against him and 10 others had begun in 2006, but had been suspended while he was Prime Minister as he had immunity.

I see now why Milan is have bad season, their money flow is now fucked.

I hope he will be out soon, he is old man, he need young birds :)

The Italian appeal system takes months apparently. I think he'll be spared prison.

I'm sure there are many many more that he had affairs with. Polanski got caught up with sodomizing a 13 yo but in court it came out that he had several affairs with 15 and 16 yos (where it was very legal, he had stressed).

They are talking about huge amounts of money here like 250 million euros. These are huge amounts of economic power. Being a Prime Minister is by definition something of a very public nature. Private businesses are just more private than public. It seems that it is just impossible for any society to exist without jails and prisons.
