Uploading H.264 videos by ftp

Ok

Slowly but surely I am getting together my site - latest project is to sort out the way I'll show video on the site. I plan to use streaming video. I have a wordpress site and am using the MediaElement.js - HTML5 Video & Audio Player plug in.

Using Premier Pro I have watermarked and created an mp4, 3mins 6 secs long which is 732, 187kb and using ftp uploaded it to the site. Several questions:

1. How long should the export of the video to H.264 take in premier pro?? Does 1½ hours seem normal?
2. How long should the upload via ftp take - about 2 hours.
3. Why is my video not playing properly on the site - it appears to be just freezing all the time????

Considering I want to upload videos as long as 10-15 mins on the site I cannot believe how long this will all take so surely this isn't the way you all work ...... or is it???:Oh crap
looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

xx

Video size is huge for average server. Other factors include your internet connection speed.

For streaming we have learned 1500 kbps is a good maximum for most users. Most peoples connects are not fast enough for higher res streaming, hence the freezing.

Give them higher res to download. Anything over 2500 kbps is overkill unless it is huge HD file. We have some HD files in the 4k kbps range.

If you want to stream really high res you are maybe looking at wowza or something. Good luck!

Thanks JuicyBunny
Will go and play with the codec.

We had to play around. Your experience may vary. Good luck. Hopefully others will put in their two cents here as well.

Your final file size seems alright, but it shouldn't take nearly that long to render. Of course, there are several variables - what is your source format? And what type of machine are you using to convert?

The time to upload it is very subjective as well - what type of connection do you have? On an average 5mbit/s cable modem connection it could easily take 1.5 hours to upload a 715mb file. Remember that your upstream bandwidth is almost always less than your downstream bandwidth.

If your video is freezing all of the time it is probably due to buffering. This, in turn, is related to your file size and your downstream bandwidth. Try reducing the quality of your .mp4 and making sure that you aren't trying to encode in surround sound or something else that would greatly increase the file size.
