I tried to upload my collection of American Cinematographer. The first issue (40mb) still hasn't uploaded, after 24 hours.

It didn't see any sort of syncing client to make things work like Dropbox.

I just downloaded that vid posted and it was a bit strange the way it handles downloads - Is it something that happens in software behind the scenes?

It was just a technical loophole so it could be something invisible.

As far as I understand it, in the case of that link mentioned here the key was part of the link, probably the part behind the ! - the part before that was the file identifier.
