We were in Boston sometime during the 'big dig' - the downtown core was absolutely fubar. Stumbled on the Bull & Finch pub quite by accident...no clue how we got there.

Boston is a good time!
So is NYC, of course.

GrantMercury 02-02-2013 09:33 PM

My home town. Yup, Boston is a clusterfuck. Great city once you know your way around (through much trial & error). It was harder before GPS, of course. But it's still a big PITA for out-of-towners. The road conditions are also comparable to the surface of the moon. Bent rims and lost hubcaps are common.

I remember the first time I drove into NYC. I'd heard about the traffic and the aggressive cab drivers, etc. I expected the worst. Well, I was amazed by just how considerate and sane I found most of the other drivers. It's Boston where you will find really aggressive, dickhead road-ragers. Massholes on all sides. Maybe just the general difficulty getting around puts all the drivers on the rag. If you're visiting from out of town, do yourself a favor - skip the rental car & just take cabs.

I go to Europe often and for some reason never have any troubles. It is near impossible to drive around Boston. Ive driven all over Europe, only problem Ive ever had was with the boarder patrol between Germany and Switzerland.

P.S. Having a navigator in the car is a common practice here.

That's how you see it. The truth is it's hard to find something when there is no underlining logic and you either know the streets or don't. When there is an underlining logic you can use that to navigate without knowing the streets.

i'm sorry, but "we" didnt think of that 500 or 1000 years ago when many cities were founded :winkwink:

not sure why you quoted the "we". Not accusing anybody of anything, merely explaining why it is difficult to navigate in most European cities.

well - i quoted the "we" the same way I would quote "we" when i said "we" won the football match - like my favorite team but i didnt play personally.

i meant we in the sense of the Europeans but of course many many generations ago :)

crockett 02-03-2013 06:39 PM

I know this feeling.. every time I go to Boston. It's still a cool city though.

I live in an area where there's a lot of new development, and winding non linear streets are encouraged in planning guidelines, because they "hide" the fact that you're just another schmuck living in a row of houses. Even the main feeder roads are often wanky "boulevards" and "drives" rather than just a straight road.

I got stuck in the middle of an unfamiliar one once and ended up picking a car to follow, hoping they were exiting.

Similar to Barcelona vs Madrid.
Barca's gridded apart from the very centre, Madrid is 17c oldskool fuck up.

Rome.. now there's a city to drive in.
