avast + spybot search and destroy does it for me.

Avira works very well for me.

These days I don't use any, then do a fresh install approx once per year. Depends which sites you go to though

Testing for some time the http://www.webroot.com - extremaly fast, no slow downs of the system. So far no problems, couple viruses properly detected and blocked.

I've been using Avast for years, and I just upgraded for 3 more. It has kept me clean for all of that time, and I visit some dark places -- like any other web surfer.
