Did it give you a prompt to update your text layers?

probably because the other files are made in a different photoshop version

are you having the correct fonts installed?

Open it in Gimp, delete (or rasterize) the conflicting layer, save, open in Photoshop. Or just redesign or export it directly out of Gimp.

If he's on 8 and you're on CS6, have them save in a legacy format and resend. Have you tried that yet?

If it's not caused by a bad font file, it's probably a known error opening PS files in different versions of PS. Mostly non-CS files opening in CS+.

Here's a trick that might work, but you'll lose your text layers:

Open the file. Click ok on the error. Link all of the text layers and then merge. Resave as a different name and reopen.

There've been times in the past where I have a font that realistically is the same font, but because it's not named exactly the same, computer doesn't recognize it as being the same. That shouldn't cause the file not to open period, but just mentioning that. Like "XXX Bold" vs. "XXX" with Bold variation selected - same font probably but Photoshop won't recognize it as such.

I would say it's probably an issue of different versions. Especially if they're really far apart versions, that can cause mysterious errors like this where Photoshop doesn't even recognize the real error and gives some unrelated one instead.
