It's official: Detroit named the most MISERABLE American city by Forbes Magazine

Quote:

Detroit has earned yet another dubious honor this week, topping Forbes? list of the most miserable cities in the U.S.

With its violent crimes, high unemployment, dwindling population and financial crisis, on Thursday Motor City dethroned Miami, which held the unflattering title last year.

Michigan was on a roll this year, going one-two on the list with Flint proclaimed the second most miserable city, followed by Rockford and Chicago in Illinois and Modesto, California, which rounded out the five most unhappy urban areas.

Detroit also has the dubious distinction as being the #1 city for urban exploration photography (abandoned buildings).

Meh, come around here to Baltimore.

Pretty sure I'll be leaving Chicago in 1-2 years for Tampa or Orlando. Sick of cold & traffic, takes me 45-50 minutes to drive 9 miles, crime hasn't affected me as it stays pretty isolated in certain areas where I don't live.

blackmonsters 02-24-2013 10:22 AM

Los Angeles is not on the list?

Bullshit.

Heh, wow. I always thought the Detroit reference was a joke.. I guess not so much :(

DTK 02-24-2013 11:23 AM

Not at all surprised to see Vallejo, Modesto and Stockton on that list. They were so-so places at best, then the Great Recession turned them to shit.

Ever been to Detroit? I drove down there last summer to go an office furniture manufacturer's factory. It was near where the riots started in 1967; 40+ years later there were still empty lots there.

I grew up in Detroit in the 60s and 70s so it's my "home city" so to speak and it looks like a war zone now. Yeah, it's about racism partially but if you look at the metro area as a whole (this includes the mostly white suburban areas) the whole area is little better than a shit hole now. After the energy crisis, the main industry the automakers and its associated business, failed to adapt to the times -- so the City of Detroit wins the prize because it is a fucked up place now... Other cities in Michigan and Ohio are well represented on that list also and for the same reasons.

The list is about misery and the quality of life. So where there are masses of poor, regardless of color, there is misery.

Why is NYC, NY on that list or New Orleans, LA not on that list?

Vallejo is closer to you than Modesto is. Are you accepting blame?

This just can not be true.

The unions run Detroit. And we have all been told that unions make life so much better.

So this story must be another blatant lie by the extreme right wing nut jobs.

Get GrantMercury in this thread...he'll get it straightened out.

Did you know that in 1980 Pastor Jacob Yasso, right, of Detroit's Sacred Heart Parish traveled to Iraq to give the keys to the city of Detroit to Saddam Hussein?

1980? What month?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_War

Yeah, funny how things changed when we decided (all by ourselves) that Kuwait was not part of country of Iraq and
told Kuwait to pump oil off disputed land and sell it to us below OPEC price as we had
them fly American flags on their tankers while we had actually agreed to buy oil from
Iraq as they helped us stamp out Muslim Extremist in Iran (8 year war) after we got our hostages back.

Just ask The First George Bush how that went down.

America : We're consistent! :1orglaugh

The UAW and the Management of the Auto Companies both had shit for brains -- they all went down together.

Both are to blame.

The Big 3's own best customers were their own overpaid workers :upsidedow

How did Ford survive the recent severe downturn? They had similar UAW contracts to their bankrupted, bailed out competitors? But really, that is not the core issue -- after 1973 they were all bailing water with a leaky bucked anyway.

There is a comparison to the tubes wiping a path of destruction to the porn paysite industry that is really strikingly similar to Detroit (the Motor City's) demise; Their ( the Tubes ) debasing the value of the (porn paysites ) product and having cheaper (albeit infringing) product (read: The Japanese imported cars). Oh yeah, in both cases the consumers liked the product better; In autos is was price and in porn is it price (free).

However, there won't be any "urban farming" in the remains of Porn City. When digital property is vacated it becomes null.
