"18 year olds are too young to be in porn" WashPo Editorial

18 Year Olds are Too Young to be in Porn

Especially refers to the Miss Delaware incident...

Instead parents need to stop treating their 16 year olds like children and help them be mature adults. Then maybe more 18 year olds would make better decisions for themselves.

What is wrong with being in porn?

JesseQuinn 03-12-2013 10:21 PM

hmmmm, seems to be the real problem with Ms Delaware's choice to do porn at 18 is that she lives in a society that judges her for it...I haven't been following the story but has she described anything harmful about her experience in porn? I know she's referred to it as a 'mistake' but realistically it would take a lot of courage to say "fuck yeah, I did it and I don't regret it", so I can't say I fault her position even if it doesn't reflect how she really feels.

The author seems to be painting her as some sort of victim that should have been protected from making her own choices when it appears that the only thing negatively impacting the chica is a hypocritical society that is ok with using sex to sell everything...except actual porn

I found the tie-in to foster care 'alumni' to be pretty fatuous as well...the author himself states that these supports aren't universal, so how is preventing 18 year olds from doing porn gonna address that issue? Assuming he actually cares and isn't just lazily employing cheap emotional rhetoric, why doesn't he focus on that rather than play benevolent white knight to some chica who clearly didn't ask for his appraisal of her choices? At any rate, the reality that many 18-21 year olds benefit from some sort of financial support as they transition into being fully self-sufficient adults doesn't negate the ability of people in said age range to make choices about what to do with their own bodies.

as to the arbitrary age requirements in the US in general...it will never make sense to me that someone can go to war but can't legally order a drink at 18. On that level, there is an argument to raise the age to 21 (in line with say, dancing or drinking), but let's not pretend that's not arbitrary.

the "is 18 an adult" issue only ever seems to arise when it involves 'all-American' white youth, particularly women. Annoying as hell.

Joshua G 03-12-2013 10:34 PM

the author simply confuses maturity & age. there is no correlation.

Phoenix 03-12-2013 11:01 PM

i agree...there are lots of girls who are 22 or so...however im not the ones shooting...and girls these days are different then they were 20 years ago

mafia_man 03-13-2013 12:36 AM

Society needs to get over it's hypocritical hatred of sex.

Mr Pheer 03-13-2013 12:48 AM

The depart of justice says 18 is old enough.

fitzmulti 03-13-2013 12:51 AM

At 18...you can legally make your own decisions.
Maybe SOME 18 year olds shouldn't...but then again "some" 30 year olds shouldn't either.

bl4h 03-13-2013 01:55 AM

They should have the right, but the fact of the matter is 98% of them will regret it. I spend half my day removing cam chicks who have hindsight regret

"im becoming a teacher can you remove my photos"
"I just got married could you remove my photos"

I think 18 year olds should have their rights, but I havent met many that thought ahead.

I actually give this disclaimer and try and warn them if i ever buy sets from amateurs. of course they still do it. Oh well its their right

just a punk 03-13-2013 01:59 AM

Are 18 year olds mature enough to kill and possible be killed (e.g. to serve in army)?

bronco67 03-13-2013 04:28 AM

Said this before, but bears repeating.

18 year olds haven't developed that part of the brain that sorts out long term consequences.....and we should all thank god for that.

BlackCrayon 03-13-2013 04:35 AM

i do think that 18 is too young however young women making mistakes and porn go hand in hand. lets be real here. girls who do one scene in porn then they're gone, its not a planned out thing. its a oh shit, i need some cash...what can i do to make it the fastest? and i'm sure most regret it later.

I agree and I shot a few 18 yrs olds and then vowed not to do it again. There is a strong lack of maturity. I had no patience for it. I agree they dont think down the road and giving them a few more years to grow emotionally wouldnt be a bad thing. .

Do they get the juvenile treatment at sentencing when the judge can consider their
maturity as a factor in the decisions they made?

Bottom line : When you serve the government(jail/army) then 18 is old enough but when it's about your liberties, then it's 21. So 18 yrs old can't make mature decisions
unless they decide to join the army or commit a crime.

If you are old enough and responsible enough to drive a vehicle that should pretty much make you an adult. It always seemed backwards to me. drive at 16, fire guns and vote at 18 but no drinking until 21(in the US)

I think 21 is a good age also; but this thing of making tons of laws that turn 18 yr old adults into children is getting fucking ridiculous.

Most 18 yr olds are going to have plenty of maturity and stifling them from doing
what they want is going to cause a backlash one day.

Also, you have to consider that the pure nature of your business is attracting those
who may not be that bright/mature no mater the age. Most mature people try to
find a real job.

There is no such thing in America that an 18 yr old does not know what porn
is and that's it all over the internet and they will be seen by everybody.
It's just bullshit to call them naive.

The article should focus on the foolish economics of 18 yr olds that do porn for free and send it out on their smart phone. :1orglaugh

I know hundreds of women who worked in porn, and not one of them had a bad experience from it. These girls made hundreds of dollars an hour, supported themselves in a lifestyle that most 18-22 year olds could only dream of, and some in cases put themselves AND their husbands through college. What damage did it do them? Someone took pictures of themselves doing something that everyone in the world does.

Do some of these woman get into drugs? They sure too. But so do nineteen year old waitresses and secretaries and no one is crying foul there.

GARY LEE 03-13-2013 08:12 AM

I hope some jack ass senator from California doesn't read this and decide they need to draft a new law.

Sophie Delancey 03-13-2013 08:31 AM

As much as I respect the fact that 18 year olds can be very mature, I would never feel comfortable starting a site for one or booking one for a shoot because it's hard to have the foresight to know if porn might not be the best choice for their future careers/aspirations at that age.

Not to "argue"...but here's a counterpoint.

What's the difference then with a "newly divorced" or "newly widowed" 30 year old woman, desperate for money doing a "few quick porn scenes"...and not taking the time to think it through, and having "the foresight to know if porn might not be the best choice for their future careers/aspirations".

There's no real answer to this...some 18 year olds are more mature than 25, 30, 40 year olds...most aren't, of course...but, they are free (here in the US) to make their own decisions...

so after a shoot one day, this 19 year old model, thin, big double Ds. did some really heavy bouncing of her boobs for me. I'm driving her back to her house. She tells me that she is going to college to become a teacher (!) so i can understand that teenagers can be naive as to their life choices. But it was really great footage! So how do i shelf that shoot? can't. The model is aware of what she is doing, where the content is going, & what happens in years hence is hard to predict. She never did become a teacher.

Jamie Gardner 03-13-2013 10:08 AM

A number of years ago, I was watching one of Bill Maher's shows and Larry Flynt was a guest. Flynt advocated dropped the age of consent to appear in porn movies to 16 years old. Flynt made the argument that people are now having sex at younger ages and that 16 is the average age that most people start having sex. With many people
advocating that the age be raised, it surprised me that Flynt would express such a controversial opinion. There is even a politician that wants the age, for performing in porn movies, to be 25 years old or older.

BlackCrayon 03-13-2013 10:21 AM

from a society shaming standpoint, the girls would be better off risking their lives selling their ass on the street or escorting. there is no movies/pictures, no record as long as you don't get caught by the cops. its a pretty poor message to be sending.

dyna mo 03-13-2013 10:28 AM

i wonder how much kim kardashian made in 2012...........

we were chatting around here recently about the "consequences" of a chick doing a porn: other than being in a beauty pageant, teaching or politics, it seems it's pretty harmless.

i believe your shaming of society perspective is old hat. there are circles of society that having sex on camera loses you some careers. There are plenty of careers left that do not. In particular, if a girl is hot, a sex video might be a career enhancer. kim kardashian is the queen of success-by-sex-video. either way, the porno stigma is slowly withering in an ocean of free porn.

BFT3K 03-13-2013 10:47 AM

I always feel a little better when the model is 21 years or older.

I've filmed a few models who were younger, and maybe I will again in the future, but in general I prefer models be 21 or older.

Many people turn 18 while they are still seniors in high school. I don't know if you gain a lot of maturity between 18 and 21, but who knows... maybe I'm just getting old.

its not my shaming. this is just reality. you may not see if in your porn bubble but if you want to do anything other than be some kind of pseudo celebrity, its going to hurt you and your family/friends will 90% of the time look down at you for it. the only reason the celeb porn tapes help them is because its under the guise of a 'stolen tape'. had kim been a vivid contract girl, no one would of cared nearly as much. anywatys, i am saying the shaming needs to change because as of right now, the message being sent is to make sure if you do sexual things for money, you better hide it and you better feel bad about it.

18, 20, 25, 30... most people regret making porn at some time or another.

If you're old enough to make the mistake of fighting and possibly dying for your country, you're old enough to make the mistake of getting in this business. Life is full of lessons and each of us usually have to learn them the hard way.

Interesting that no one is talking about Hollywood and how they use underage actors in scene's that can be categorized as porn or mature subject matter but because it's Hollywood it's ok. Either way it stands if the law states it's ok, then it's ok. Anything else is a personal opinion. Mine opinion is no worse or better than anyone elses in this issue and doesn't really matter at the end of the day. It's a fact of life and law.

particularly if said youth is racialized (in the US black youth are 10 times more likely to be sentenced as adults than comparable white youth)

I know this is slightly off-topic but it's a concept implicit in the article. How 'in need of protection' teenagers/youth are deemed to be is directly related to their social location (and perceived worth to society in general). Why did the author choose to direct his focus on one chica who made a choice that doesn't seem to have physically or mentally harmed her in any way rather than at the thousands of (disproportionately low income and racialized) U.S. youth sentenced to life in prison for crimes they committed as juveniles? They don't count cuz they're not pretty white girls denied a beauty pageant crown?
