DNS Speed

Hi guys, is DNS Speed related to how big and how well coded my site is?

I'm with godaddy.. are they just slow? and is there a faster provider? thnx

No, DNS is a link between the user and your server. A DNS will take me typing in "boobs.com" and hook me up to the IP that it's with. There's nothing you can do server side to decrease DNS time - it's your users route to accessing your computer.

You might be mistaking DNS for main server speed. This will be affected by how well coded your site is and how big each page comes in at. You can use tools such as http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ to check your website's load speeds. Some providers might offer slightly better speeds, but a lot of it comes down to sit optimization.

We have measured several DNS provider with enterprise class monitoring softwares from several datacenter across the globe, and dyn is one of the best.

First it is user. Then it is root dns to your provider. Most often the problem is user.

FYI if your server is set up to handle it's own DNS, usually Bind (the named process you see on the server) is the software responsible for your DNS management. Now there are ways to increase the reaction time but it will probably only be noticible with hundreds of recursive clients. You (or your server admin) can look into TinyDNS, it's light-weight so consumes less memory and supposed to be faster. Google Bind VS TinyDNS.
